Pixiwoo's BodyTalk

A couple of weeks ago and I sat down with Sam and Nic from Pixiwoo to talk about skincare. I say 'talk'. I mean 'rant'.

Thank you to the girls for having me and the team for being so hospitable. Next time we should do it with wine. :)

  1. Hi Caroline! :) loved your honesty in this video! :)

I was just wondering two things:

    1) do you know of a relatively cheap product that will do the same thing as Serozinc from LRP?

    2) With regards to Aveda's skincare and what you say about using 2 toners - would Aveda's hydrating lotion & Exfoliant work well together? As in, would you use the exfoliant and then the hydrating lotion? Thinking about buying the starter kit, you see!

    Thanks in advance,

    Katy :)

  2. You are the sister I never had (and always wish I did).
I can't explain how grateful I am for all the information you are willing to share with us (past all the marketing BS that companies bombard us with).
I'll make sure to pass it on to generations to come.
    Long live the Hirons Method.

  3. OMG... I've only watched about 10 seconds because I'm saving it to watch before I go to sleep later (not creepy) but I've been pronouncing your surname wrong this whole time! Well, now I know. You look beautiful in the video, can't wait to watch it x

  4. Hi Caroline,
Loved the video! It was great to finally put a voice to the words I've been reading!

Quick question. I'm from the U.S. and I get a bit confused when I hear the word "flannel". Is this the equivalent of a normal washcloth in the U.S. or is it something different?

    Thank you so much!

  5. Dear Caroline,
Loved the video I just wanted to ask a quick question. I use the avene cleanance k at night and it contains AHAs I believe it's 6%glycolic and 2% lactic acids, should I still use a exfoliating toner like clarins/aveda

  6. Hey Caroline! Great video feature. Had a question about using P50/Pixi Glow Tonic if you don't mind. I use a serum with glycolic acid at night (La Roche Posay Pigment Control), is it too much to use something like the P50 at the same time? Or should I finish with the serum first?

  7. I do like to listen to what you say; "to age is a privilege" what a fabulously profound phrase...Thankyou

  8. Sam and Nic are very lucky to have Caroline to talk skin care with them. Frankly i would like to kidnap you to sort my skin out!!

  9. Great video with Sam & nic & great to hear you speak! Thanks for all your amazing information

  10. Quick question - if you use makeup wipes to remove the bulk of your makeup before cleansing with a balm or cream cleanser is that still ok?

  11. Oh my gosh- my three favorite people all together?! So exciting to see you three chat and to see your beautiful face in action. Please do more of these sorts of things :)

  12. Oh my gosh- my three favorite people all together?! So exciting to see you three chat and to see your beautiful face in action. Please do more of these sorts of things :)

  13. Oh Caroline this was amazing - you should do more vids... absolutely love listening to you talk about skincare!

    Nic x

  14. This video was amazing! I just had a quick question. Do you have any alternatives for Hydraluron (which isn't available in America)?

    1. If you live near the Canadian border, we have it at Shoppers Drug Mart! :)

    2. OMG tell me about it! The Walgreens website lied to me, I called every Walgreens that said they had it in store (because it was unavailable to order) but nada. And then I went home to the Philippines and found the sort of Filipino version lol.

The brand is called Hyalure Dermaformulated, and they have moisturizers, face washes, toners etc. Available at Mercury Drug, for P350+ I'm using the moisturizer and it's working ok, probably not the exact same version of Hydraluron though.

    3. Been using VIZ-1000™ 75% Hyaluronic Acid Complex by Peter Thomas Roth for past month. It has done wonders for my dry skin. Found it in sephora.

  15. Awesome! this video was awesome! So exciting to see you three and your beautiful face in action. Thanks for all your information.

  16. I found this so interesting! I definitely need to get myself an exfoliating toner!

    Gem x

  17. Loved this - shared it with all my friends who only believe in "natural" skincare bullshit. Anyway, would love to know your thoughts on this - I found it very odd - particularly that she faffs around with her hair but it's still hanging all over her face...

  18. I just discovered your blog and I can't stop reading, so much useful information. I also have a question. I've seen people raving about using apple cider vinegar as a toner, what do you think about that?

  19. This was so informative. Thank you for sharing. I think I am doing most things right (mostly from reading some of your blogs) not all though like the exfoliating toner but would the cane & austin 10% glycolic do this? I have an unopened box! Also you said no foaming washes what so ever but I have the Emma Hardie one along with the balm that I use to mix in with it. Is this going to dry out my skin more? Should I ditch it? Many thanks if you have time to answer:)

  20. Hi Caroline, I really hope you can give me some advice on which cream to buy, I am looking a thick moisturising cream without mineral oil in it, do you have any suggestions, preferably a cheaper brand? Also I am going to buy a cleansing balm and found out that clinique do one without mineral oil in it, have you tried it and if so what do you think of it? Please reply as my skin is so awful at the minute and I need help! You are so brilliant at what you do and the video you did with the pixiwoo girls is fab! Your newest fan is me xx

  21. Love u ,I really need your help here in Dubai .I am going to volunteer in Sudan for 3 month I need some serious help please help me.My skin is extremely oily on the T-zone with some dry patches and bad under eye circles and a few lines under my eyes and on my forehead.I need a whole routine day/night.I'm 31 plus most of the stuff mentioned aren't available here in Dubai plese help me my email is
Thanks for sharing and for your time
    Love u

  22. Hi Caroline, you made me realize I need to change my routine... A lot. I was wondering which cleansing balm you recommend more: Emma Hardie or Aurelia? Both seem great and have no clue which one to get - not an option to get both. I'm combo/oily skin, sometimes breakouts, very dehydrated. Lots of love x.

  23. I have read almost your entire blog starting yesterday after watching you on Pixiwoo channel :) thankyou for doing what you do and I love how blunt you are!

After scouring your blog I have a few questions: You say to use a balm/gel/milk (no foaming or mineral oil) to get makeup off/wash the face, but a couple times in the blog you also said NOT to use a milk cleanser ...?!

If I were to use an exfoliative toner ex) clarins ... do you also need to exfoliate? what would u recommend as I know you HATE physical scrubs.

If you use the exfoliant toner do you still need to put a moisture spray overtop. I noticed you said the evian water spray is useless yes vichy, avene, LRP are acceptable. are those moisturizing enough?

does this seem appropriate to put this many things on the skin haha...

    cleanse/tone/moisturespray/pepta-bright/hydraluronic acid/moisturize/sunscreen

    1. That is what I am trying to figure out too :) I have all of the above but I am unsure if I need a serum as well.

  24. Great information thank you. I never thought you could put two masks on one after the other. I have the oskia renassince mask, not sure if this is to be used like the omorvizica deep cleasning clay mask & used first before a hydrating mask or would I use this as a hydrating mask.(I am no good with ingredients) I also have a gatineau aquamemory moisture replenishng mask again no idea if this is a good mask, I got it free & I have never used it. The omorvozica mask is on my shopping list as well as the aveda but if you have time to answer & let me know about the two i mentioned thank you. Loved the video.

  25. Just discovered your blog after watching this Pixiwoo's video, you've got a new reader now.

  26. Absolutely fantastic video, so lovely to finally hear your voice! I've loved your blog for a good while now and have been so tempted by the Emma Hardie Balm. This may have pushed me over the edge... 'tis now shipping its way towards me!

  27. I have found somewhere to buy Serozinc.

  28. You saved my skin before I carried on soon more damage to my skin and finance. Spending it on harmful products useless too my acne prone skin!!! Xxxx

  29. Sometimes my moisturizer (several different kinds have done this) will just ball up and flake off seconds after I apply it. Any idea why this could be happening?

  30. just ordered the emma hardie cleansing balm, i have high hopes, can you recommend a cheaper alternative to the zelens moisturiser for dry dehydrated skins 45 years young

  31. Hey Caroline loved this video and have similar problems as Nic from what i gathered in the video and would love some advice on which products to add and get rid of.
my skins is definately dehydrated and maybe dry too (i constantly suffer from a dry forehead). i have a constant flush going on in my cheeks that look abit patchy and feeling constantly tight and am not sure if its due to sensitive skin, although i dont suffer bad reactions when adding new products in my skincare. anyway heres a list of the type of products i use:
Clarins Cleansing Milk -Normal to Dry-wipe off with multiple cotton pads
Origins Make a Difference lotion (TBH not 100% what if its actually doing anything for my skin)
Clarins Hydraquench (AM) Make a Difference Night Skin Rejuvenating Gel cream (PM)

Any adivce would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks :D

  32. Hi Caroline

I am 24 with normal/ combination skin, I would love some advice on a good daytime moisturiser please

    Current routine:

    Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm
    Clarins exfoliating toner
Estee lauder Day wear advanced multi protection anti-oxidant creme spf 15

    Emma Hardie cleansing balm
    Clarins exfoliating toner
    Estee Lauder advanced night repair
    Origins nightamins

I also use Alpha h liquid gold 1-2 times a week

I find the current estee lauder day moisturiser too heavy especially if I choose to wear a primer and foundation on top!

I would love some advice. My budget is upto £100

    Many thanks

  33. hi! i can't seem to find the serozinc spray in the u.s. is the thermal spring water ok, or it the same as the evian face water? what about the ren moisture mist ? thanks!

    1. I would love to now about this as well! selenium is the main ingredient?

  34. Great video! So informative and I loved seeing your skincare picks- bookmarked

  35. I thought you were amazing on Pixiwoos YouTube! Just a quick question, I know you get inundated with questions all the time so sorry to be a pain! But I was wondering if you could recommend a daily moisturiser for dry/dehydrated skin, that sits well under make up. a daily moisturiser is the one step I'm missing! Thank you xx

  36. Brilliant video, thank you. No BS and straight to the point. I have to compliment you on making it intellectually acceptable to care about skincare ;-). Your blog is a much needed breath of fresh air.

  37. Please share some useful information about acne scars and stretch marks. I’m a housewife, can’t even go to some salon for some classified skin treatment. I would love to have some information about the home remedies to overcome and remove unwanted scars on my face and around my belly button.

  39. Hi Caroline! Great, concise video.

    I have 2 questions:
    1) Should I be exfoliating with a liquid exfoliant (such as the clarins one you mentioned) EVERYDAY? A clarins lady recently told me that I should only use it once a week/ every 10 days.
    2) Is there anything equivalent to cerozinc by LRP currently sold in the uk?

Any guidance would be much appreciated :)

  40. we absolutely love those girls!

  41. Hi Caroline - just found your site 4 weeks ago and you have TRANSFORMED by skin!! I was doing everything I shouldn't have been - have really oily dehydrated rosacea prone, acne prone skin and had been overexfoliating, under moisturising, hammering it with BHAs etc. Well, now this is my routine and I have calmer less red, no new whiteheads, plumper skin - I can't believe it!
Intral cleanser - first time I used this, thought lord, this is going to break me out but all it does is soothe, soothe, soothe. Doing a double cleanse and taking it all off with a warm flannel is all the exfoliating I'm doing and I have never been less flaky. Before I would flake all day, be super oily and look like a crocodile on the surface. Thought I would ease myself into creamy cleansers by using milk cleanser rather than an oily balm at first as I do have a tendency to sting with certain essential oils but maybe I'll move onto the Emma Hardie when I've finished the intral.
Intral toner - again lovely and soothing.
Hydraluron - this should be renamed - "Oil reduction serum" - seriously, this has soooo reduced my oiliness as I introduced this first into my new regime (I always only start one new product at a time as if I breakout/react, I wouldn't know what was causing it so it's taken me a while to get these new products in and this was the first one I used - fabulous!)
Then I use Avene HydraOptimale riche (think that's what it's called) - the one without SPF. Again, was worried this would break me out but just plumper soothed skin.
Now I've seen you on the video above, you've just confirmed the validity of this new regime as your skin is INCREDIBLE - you do not have one line on your forehead - how is that possible????
So next up I want to introduce a soothing hydrating mask (thinking Aromatherapy Associates Rose Hydrating Mask - ok?) but must admit will skip clay based as in the past they have always broke me out. Then need to think about an exfoliating toner, although am allergic to glycolic acid (makes my nose skin ooze clear flud - really strange, think it breaks down my protective barrier too much??)so the clarins one is out so looking for a gentle BHA one? Any recs?
Then I'm planning on going back to my retinol product Avene Eluage gel which I stopped a few months back as my skin was so irritated but now I think it will be able to tolerate it with this soothing new regime.
I can't thank you enough - you have transformed my skin and I love your irreverent attitute!

    1. I know I'm not Caroline (oh how I wish) but she's inspired me to become better educated on skincare and how/why it will work. An acid will only work effectively at a lower pH because then more acid is available for the skin to actually use. A product that has 2% salicylic acid at pH 2.2 will work much more effectively than one at pH 4.0. If you're looking for a gentle exfoliator you might want to try mandelic acid. Here's an article on why mandelic acid is gentler than other AHA's: (though I'd recommend you do more research on your own first before buying anything) and here are a couple of options for mandelic toners
If you really want BHA then I'd recommend this
or any of these (you can pick a pH rating that you prefer)
all of those have low enough pH ratings to be effective
If you want a combined BHA/AHA product at an effective pH then these ones are very good (I use them on my skin and they've really helped with unclogging pores):
They also sell AHA or BHA only products. I hope that helps!

    2. Gosh thatnks Sydney - that's a lot of information! Will research these now and thanks so much for getting back to me.

  42. Hi Caroline

I was just wondering if P50 would be suitable for really sensitive skin as I am a little hesitant to try it. As a lot of moisturisers, serums & nights creams seem to clog up my skin & break me out.

    Many thanks! x

  43. This has to be one of the best videos I've watched! You can really really tell Caroline knows what the hell she's talking about!! A few products I definitely want to try!! Thank Caroline! :)

  44. Hi Caroline,

I was wondering if could help me out with any tips, as I am getting married in August. I have combination skin (fair skin- asian) and until about 4 years ago I had clear skin with no issues, the occassional spots during the time of the month. Now, I suffer with a few really large inflamed spots all the time and don't go away fully..not sure if this is due to the stress of I'm approaching my finals of pharmacy, my skins taking a toll as I'm super stressed. Do you have any suggestions including what would be a suitable moisturiser for my skin type?

    Kind regards

  45. I started following your blog after finding out about you on body talk. I wish you had your own youtube channel, you're amazing!

  46. Hi Caroline,
I am wanting to purchase the Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask but my skin is sensitive and some masks burn my skin. Because it is quite expensive, do you think it will be suitable?

I always have pimples on my cheeks - I have taken 8 fish oils/day for 1 year now, and have used all the products you have recommended for my skin type through your blogs, clinics e.g. Emma Hardie, Neals Yard, Intral toner, SOS serum, liquid gold and p50w etc. :(

  47. Recieved the Serozinc, which i ordered from the below online pharmacy, very quickly. It is really nice stuff!! Cooling and soothing for my red, hot, often angry, skin.
Postage costs a little on the high side, but it's the only place i found online.

  48. Dear Caroline,
This beauty talk was absolutely fascinating ! I was drinking each and every of your wise words !
I'm so glad you mentioned the La Roche Posay Serozinc because it's been on my wish list for a while so I'm definitely going to Citypharma next week to pick one up !

I absolutely agree on your stance regarding mineral oil and silicons (although you don't mention silicons in this particular video, I had time to read a tone of your wonderful articles which made me laugh so hard considering your guiding is coupled with both ultra relevant advice and hilarious comments !)
I am so furious at the beauty industry for including so much silicon in every single product available in the market ! It's in my all time favorite La Roche Rosay hydreane légère moisturizer, the Nuxe rêve de miel lipbalm (not surprising now I get where the nourishing while matte finish comes from), body lotions/butters, hand creams, 80% of Caudalie moisturizers and serums ! Absolutely everywhere !

And while I could understand it'd be a cheaper alternative for brands like Garnier, L'Oréal or even French pharmaceutical brands, I almost had a heart attack when I saw that in a 85euros Chanel moisturizer you had it ! Considering the price it's absolutely outrageous that they don't make any effort to have cleaner and more elaborated formulas ! I'm absolutely gutted !

Also I like your idea of exfoliating with chemicals instead of beads. So you mentioned the Pixi and the Clarins ones being more affordable than your favorite. So I checked the ingredient lists of those and I wanted to know if these ones that I found on which contain glycolic acid among other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for example could be a nice match as well:

Also considering what I said previously on silicons and all those goodies, I have decided to switch to organic/raw products and ingredients as much as possible. I have dehydrated and more or less acne prone skin (mainly scars) and use organic aleppo soap to wash my face 4 times a week. But most of the time I tone my skin with pure organic cornflower water.

For skincare I use pure raw organic jojoba oil at day time and nigella oil at night time from Aroma Zone that you can find in Paris and they also have a website to make your own organic beauty recipes. Any opinion ? Have you heard of Aromazone before ? It is boulevard saint-germain (métro: maubert-mutualité)

I would love to hear your thoughts as you are now my official skincare/beauty goddess and I will keep worshiping you for the rest of my life ^^ And thank you again for sharing all your recommendations with the lovely Chapman sisters !

  49. OMG! after that video (I've watched it yesterday) today I'm reading your whole blog, post after post in several page insets! Thank you so much! You just opened a skincare world to me!

  50. I'm bummed that I didn't know about your blog when I got my last student loan instalment in and had the money to invest in the kind of products you recommend, but I'm glad I came across this at all, I definitely know what I'm going to be spending my money on from now on, yes, toners ;)
