Inspiring Women

During the latter half of last year, I signed up to volunteer for the Inspiring Women campaign.
This week I gave my first talk at a secondary state school for special needs young adults in London. To say I left feeling humbled and inspired would be a massive understatement.
Inspiring Women is a national campaign launched a year ago that has 12,500 women ready to talk with girls in state schools about the ‘job they do’ and the route they took. Their ambition is to see 15,000 women from a wide range of occupations going into state schools, by summer 2015, talking to 250,000 young women.

If you are interested in volunteering your time, I can't recommend the experience highly enough. More information on the Inspiring Women Campaign can be found on the website here and in the video below.

  1. Signing up right now! This is such a brilliant initiative.

I have 3 much younger sisters and they all keep mentioning career ideas that are very much gendered. Except the 10 year old who this week told me she loved science. So here's hoping we can keep encouraging her to follow that interest!

  2. What a great idea and it seems typical of you to be involved with this. I wish there had been someone like you to guide and inspire me when I was at school. Instead I was railroaded into an office and consequently felt a failure for many years as I was so crap at it. Anything that instills confidence into our young people can only be a good thing.

Caroline you inspire me and I am pushing 60 so please keep up your amazing work.

  3. Offering examples is so important to children. As you will know, because you have a lot of them.
    You truly are inspiring!

  4. I've just signed up for mentoring with The Girl's Network. They build one to one relationships between older women and girl's at schools in deprived areas. The scheme hopes to help the girl's build self worth and realise that there are more options out there than just the ones they see modelled at home. Weirdly, the school we're working with is in an area I know really well because I grew up 20 minutes down the road. Location isn't just about housing, but every area of your life. Good for you!

  5. This is such a fantastic idea! It's definitely the kind of thing I'd like to get involved in in the future!!

  6. Signing up to this! Really good initiative! Thanks for bringing this to our attention. xx

  7. Hi Caroline, I'm definitely going to sign up for this -- what a great idea. You now inspire not only ALL my skincare/beauty choices but now this as well…. you're getting dangerously into "guru" territory, Lady Hirons! Thanks for everything you do. XXX

  8. Hi Caroline,

If possible, would you be able to record a version of the talk you gave for us? I'm a 23yr old currently feeling stuck in my current occupation, and would really love to hear how you got where you are (and possibly to inspire me to muster up the courage to change career paths too!)
