It has colour on application but that rubs away.

Potential to block pores based on the above?:
It shouldn't do, it's quite a powdery finish.

Does it leave you shiny?
No, it's powdery.

Is it sticky?

Contains fragrance?

Suitable for all skin types?
Yes, including very sensitive, but very dry may prefer the sun product as it feels a little more emollient on the skin.

Water resistant/waterproof/sweat resistant?
Sweat resistant, but i'd still reapply on the top of the forehead if you're out in the heat.

Suitable for beach and city use?
Yes, but I would be tempted to stick to the designated areas as it were, as the beach products have added benefits for sun damage.

Antioxidants/any further skin benefits?

Additional info?
I love Clinique suncare. The beach and city products are both great and I personally have never had any adverse reactions to them.

The Super City Block 40SPF is one of my most requested product reviews so I thought I would lead off with that.

  1. Hi Caroline, what are your thoughts on the physical version please?

  2. City block is my favorite spf for face!

  3. I read the first blog post you had for this spf and bought it. No regrets! It's not oily and works perfect as a makeup primer for my oily/dehydrated skin.

    Thanks Caroline for the recommendation!

  4. Hi love your blog. Does applying foundation containing SPF after sunblock offer any further protection or do the ingredients interfere with each other ?

  5. Does applying foundation containing SPF after your sunblock offer any further protection or do the ingredients interfere with each other?

  6. Hi! I work at Whole Foods market and have many customers coming in for a "natural" sunscreen. I used to always refer to the EWG but have been a fan of yours for so long and trust your judgement, therefore I am starting to doubt all of the scaremongering that the natural industry can get into. That being said are their any ingredients you would recommend avoiding? Other than mineral oil of course :)
    Thanks :)

  7. Few years ago I bought that product in Sephora and it was awful! Oil in it separated from water, but the lady at the counter told me it's ok, and it should look like that. I didn't like using it. And in my opinion such light tinted moisturisers can make the false impresion that You aplied enough product to get protection. In my opinion it's never enough. You need a thick layer, that's why I like non-colour creams.

  8. I use this under my makeup every day & I absolutely love it. As well as being a good high SPF, it's a great primer which also evens out skintone & makes my foundation more flawless.

  9. Hi Caroline,
Thank you very much for your posts, sooo helpful! It would be great if you could also suggest/post on few good quality beach spfs for face. So many on the market and that's very confusing

    1. Hi - Caroline already made a post about this subject. Check out the SPF - beach - face (Clarins) post from the 5th of August. :)

  10. Love the details you've posted about this, Caroline! My friend wanted to try this out but the lady at the counter was so rude to tell her that she should stick to what she (the lady) knows - which is the small City Block my friend has used for years instead of her (my friend) own desires to try this out. Now I can recommend this to her! x

  11. Reading this makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong. This leaves me feeling greasy after I put it on. So I let it set in then use blotting papers before I apply my makeup.

  12. I can't use City Block, always pills for me :(
Plus I feel like it always leaves a slight tint which I don't like (not a foundation wearer).

  13. I find this sunblock makes me oilier - I do have oily skin anyway but this definitely doesn't leave me with a powdery feel, and under make-up it just doesn't work for me. I've been using the La Roche Posay one recently which I find is less oily but the same good "block factor" - as I am outdoors pretty much all the time with my job.

  14. This one peels on me and leaves a film on the skin, the whole day.
    Thanks for your reviews Caroline!
