Hall of Fame - Chantecaille Just Skin

Shiny new logo for a shiny New Year!

After discussing Chanel's new foundation earlier this week and mentioning this, it occurred to me that it has hardly been mentioned here, despite me using it for 10+ (or thereabouts) years. Chantecaille Just Skin

How is it described?
'This exceptionally versatile three-in-one formula represents a new approach to foundation, powered by the latest Japanese technology. It provides excellent coverage, smooths fine lines and offers sun protection.'

For me, it's a cross between a tinted moisturiser and a foundation, but it's closer to the moisturiser end of the spectrum.

How many shades?

What's in it?
Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Noepentyl Glycol Diethylhexanoate, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Peg-400, Magnesium Sulfate; May Contain: Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Dimethicone/ Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Mica, Silica, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Phenoxyethanol, Dextrin Palmitate, Methylparaben, Tocopherol, Methicone, Alcohol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Algae Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Preregen, Nectapure, Edelweiss GC, Rose Water Concentrated E4445, Colorants, Talc, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Stearic Acid, Aluminum Hydroxide

How best to apply?
I apply with fingers. It's almost like a moisturiser.

How's the coverage?
It covers but it's sheer. You can still see skin underneath.

Do you need a primer with it?
No, but I use one.

Can you feel it on the skin? Is it breathable?
Extremely breathable, this literally feels like a face cream as opposed to a foundation.

Does it give good glow?
This being Chantecaille, of course. Skin is luminous after application.

What's the staying power?
I can happily apply once in the morning and it will last most of the day. If I was going out in the evening however, I would have to reapply. Due to the high water content it will go patchy if you are dehydrated. I take this as my cue to add a ton of hydration after the evening cleanse.

Does it block pores?
No. It's light and doesn't sit 'in' the skin.

Best skin type/age?
You will need more coverage than this if you have particularly problematic skin. It's brilliant if you have fairly good skin, and across any age, but I think it would be most appreciated by a slightly older skin - and by that, I mean 30+.

Anti-ageing benefits? And would they/do they work?
Yes. And yes, in my experience.
Hyaluronic acid, 'botanical anti-pollution and antioxidants' including honeysuckle, green tea and edelweiss.

SPF content? Chemical/physical?
15 - physical - titanium dioxide

Who is it best for?
Anyone wanting light-medium coverage, it is buildable, but not for you if you want heavy-duty coverage.

Does it service WOC with the shades?
No. I love Chantecaille but they have a long way to go with darker colours, not just in this, but in Future Skin and the Compact Makeup also. And some of the names of the darker Future Skin colours are just 'no', but that's for another conversation.

Like I said, I've used this for years, it's in my permanent stash and my backup stash. I switch between Tan and Wheat, depending on my sun exposure, the time of year etc.
I won't be without it.
A little goes a long way, I probably use two tubes a year.

Chantecaille Just Skin is £58.00 from or $69.00 on

  1. "For me, it's a cross between a tinted moisturiser and a foundation, but it's closer to the moisturiser end of the spectrum."

So, its some kind of BB cream?

    1. No, not really. For me it is a lightweight foundation. I have very pale , reasonable condition skin and I look professional, polished but not overly made up with it. I sometimes work very long hours and rarely have to touch it up, if I do it is for environmental reasons, or my own dehydration, rather than the product itself.

  2. So as its only 15spf, do you think you need a separate one in addition? I'm St Moritz in Nars tinted moisturiser, can I find a similar shade from this brand? Thanks Caroline!

  3. Thank you for answering the question of is this for women of color? I would love to know why company's in the luxury, high end market still won't in today's time cater to us! We have just as much money to spend as anyone else. Sorry for the rant,
Anyways love your blog and You Tube videos!

  4. Hi Caroline and hello to everyone else too,

I have just ordered the Chantecaille SPF 50 primer and am now panicking that it doesn't appear to have the UVA stamp! Have I just wasted a tone of money on a sunscreen which isn't UVA safe?

    1. Hi Gee, I'm not Caroline but have used the factor 50 serum for about 3 years. I'm fifty this year, fair skin on my face which burns more easily than the rest of my body. My skin is quite sensitive, dry with occasional perioral dermatitis on the side of my chin......I LOVE this product and I have never burned. Make up sits well on top (factor 20ish foundation) and doesn't do that irritating balling thing! If anything I get a slightly taught feeling by the end of the day. Hope that helps.

  5. Hi Caroline, adding to Nicole's comments, any suggestions for foundations for asian( oriental) skin? I cannot find the right shade anywhere! Tks!

  6. Love, love, love this stuff and discovered it thanks to one of your earlier blog posts. I mix with a drop of TBS vitamin E serum in winter for my very dry skin and it seems to keep the dry patches at bay. It is worth every euro <3

  7. I'm on a real mission to sort out my skin (big task but I'll get there!!) just so I can actually wear less make-up on a daily basis. I'd love to use something like this rather than a foundation, so lets use this as a bit of motivation, ok? I've heard nothing but good things about it!

  8. I love Just Skin. It's the perfect no-makeup makeup and I also use it to sometimes sheer other foundations out slightly. One of my faves!

  9. My skin is horrible at the moment (hello pregnancy hormones), so I have shied away of the purchase, but the sound of it feeling like nothing on the skin really intrigues me.

  10. How does it compare to Estee launder cc cream that's also in your hall of fame?

  14. Hi Caroline, I don't have any real issues with my skin - other than I'd like it to be younger - I'm 61. I've never had acne so no real blemishes but my cheeks and nose are rather red - I'm a gardener and outdoors in all weathers - I guess it could even be rosacea. I'm trying to decide between this and Chanel Les Beiges when it launches. Any advice on which would be best one for me to use - like you I hate the feel of foundation. Many thanks in advance for this and for all the other great advice you've given (and I've done my best to follow) over the years.

  15. Hi Caroline, I would love to be able to use this but as you said I don’t think it would give me enough coverage. I desperately need your help! I have been having so much trouble with my skin lately and it is really getting me down L As if Jan blues isn’t bad enough!

I have read all your cheat sheets and searched for product recommendations but nothing seems to work for me as I am still getting large painful spots and clogged pores. Especially around my jaw line, cheeks and mouth. All of this is also mixed with some lovely random dry patches on my face! I use a salicylic acid based cleanser (Neutrogena visibly clear2in1 Wash and Mask, with a flannel of course!) followed by either first aid beauties toner pads or Alpha gold (every other day in the evenings) I also alternate this with Decleor exfoliator. I then use Ren Clearcalm gel to moisturise. On particularly bad skin days I will use la roche posay effaclar duo along with the serozinc spray.

I also try to do regular facial massage with my emma hardy cleansing balm or trliogy rose hip oil as well as regular masks using dermalogica and Liz earl masks.

Despite all of this I am still spotter then I was as a teenager and don’t know what more I can do! Its not a good look in your 30th’s

I know you must get hundreds of these kinds of questions everyday but if you could spare any time to point me in the right direction I would just be so grateful x

    1. Have you spoken to anyone about hormones? If you are on birth control it could be that which is the problem. When I have anything with proestrogen my skin is a nightmare, with huge cystic spots on my cheeks and jawline (which is a hormone related area for spots). It could be that you need a different type, I'm 32 and have had some really bad bouts of acne over the past 8 years or so while experimenting with different types of BC.

If it is that though, then doing everything you're doing will make the marks heal and fade so much faster, my skin is pretty much redness free, aside from the odd stress related flare up because of following Caroline's advice. It's worth looking in to :)

    2. Yes I am on a proestrogen only pill so that would make a lot of sence!the spots I get are also cystic like and very sore. Will definitely make an appointment with GP. Thanks for your help!

  16. Hi Caroline,

VERY interested in trying this. I don't like using foundation because I don't like the look/feel on my face. I also figure, why would I want to cover up my skin when I spend so much money to keep it looking good, right? :)

Wondering how you'd compare this to Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer (what I currently use). I'm 25 with combination skin. Get a random spot or two each month. Overall fairly clear skin. I'm wondering which might be best for me. I like having something that enhances my complexion (minimizes pores) knowing I'm not going to be able to completely cover up flaws that show up. Thoughts?

  17. Hi Caroline. Can you recommend something like this for a woman of color? Or something that does include darker shades? You may have done this in years past. I am a new follower. Thanks
