Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture

Describe the brand in five words.
Doc. Water. Derm. Acne. American.

What is it?
'A luxurious, yet lightweight cream that provides 24-hour hydration to restore suppleness and visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.'

A moisturiser.

Who is it for?
Murad say this is for dry/dehydrated skin. They have an essence for oily/combo skins, although I have used this on clients with oilier skins with much success.

What’s in it?
Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Sunflower Seed Oil, Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Behenate/Eiosadioate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Shea Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Myristyl Myristate, Cetyl Alcohol, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Stearic Acid, Oat Kernel Extract, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Yeast Amino Acids, Betaine, Inositol, Taurine, Trehalose, Soybean Sterols, Corn Starch, Olive Fruit Oil, Avocado Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Linoleic Acid, Phospholipids, Polysorbate 60, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer, Isohexadecane, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Panthenol, Jojoba Alcohol, Potassium Jojobate, Polysorbate 80, Urea, Glucosamine HCI, PEG-8, Bisabolol, Sorbitan Oleate, Cetearyl Methicone, Dimethicone, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Retinyl Palmitate, Allantoin, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Ethylhexylglycerin, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol

What's not in it?
Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates

Possibly acne/allergy/troubling for some ingredients?
Shea butter - but it is far enough down the inci to not cause me an issue.

Natural? Organic? Man made? Vegan?
Man made

Tested on animals/sold in territories that advocate testing?
No/Yes

How does it smell?
Fragrance-free

How does it feel on the skin?/Absorption rate?
Feels lovely on the skin, absorbs nice and slow.

How do you use it?/Where to use in your routine?
After serums, am and/or pm.

How long before you should see results?
It's a moisturiser, so immediately.

How long did I test it for?
I used up the entire jar.

How much is it? /Size
£55.00/$72.00 for 50ml.
Lasted me a couple of months, and I'm heavy-handed.

What’s good about it?
This is a great, solid moisturiser that not only works brilliantly on its own but allows the serums you use underneath it to work as they are supposed to, without interfering with their action.
It's fragrance-free, so suitable for people with those specific sensitivities, yet not unpleasant or 'functional' to use. Feels luxurious on the skin but leaves no residue or greasiness at all.
I've used this on the majority of clients in treatments, finishing off fairly aggressive treatments (under SPF) with great results. It hydrates, nourishes and moisturises, exactly as it says on the pot.

What’s not so good about it?
Nothing. Not one complaint.

Works well with?
Every single serum I have trialled in the last two months (or thereabouts) was used with this moisturiser. In fact the only time I strayed, I got spots. That review is coming.

What’s the website like?
It's good. A bit of a trek to find all the ingredients listings, but at least they do have them - I would've expected a Dr's site to make them more accessible though. Other than that it's fine. A bit basic, but fine.

Would I purchase/repurchase?
Absolutely.

Hall of Fame - Makeup Atelier Paris Waterproof Liquid Corrector & Concealer

A few months back I attended IMATS and did a tour around the room with my great friend Kevin James Bennett. He walked me over to the Love Makeup stand and essentially told me to buy these. No option.
I felt what it must be like to go cleanser shopping with me. 'Buy this. Don't talk, just get your wallet out.'
They were £8.00 as a special show price so I bought two. Well, reader, I married him wish I had bought all of them.

This concealer has replaced all of my usual choices, with the exception of my Urban Decay Naked, which I have kept on hand because it's slightly thicker, so good for active blemishes.

I use this around my eyes, on pigmentation, on scarring, all over. It's light, non-drying and dries quickly. The clincher though, for me, is the waterproof feature. If I was in a circus sideshow I would be 'The Incredibly Sweaty Woman' and this concealer DOES. NOT. BUDGE. The weather in London has been uncharacteristically hot this week and this concealer has been a life-saver.
I mean it literally stays put like a dog waiting for it's owner to come out of a store. Or a kid waiting for you to come out of the loo (speaking from direct experience on that one).

So, I'm bringing out the Hall Of Fame badge. For it's price, colour range and quality this is a no-brainer. For reference, I use FLWA2 and FLWA3, but there is a great guide for how to pick your correct colour on the website here.

It's £12.50 and for some reason is not currently available at LoveMakeup.co.uk so the links are:

LoveMakeup.co.uk - not currently on sale, but a brilliant site worth investigating if you're a true makeup obsessive

Kevin James Bennett - puts the word 'Pro' back into Professional Makeup Artist - I love him. There is nothing, nothing, this man does not know about makeup. I will buy whatever he says, whenever he says it.

Fave Fives Requests

Here's one I made earlier.
Lovely People!

Just checking in after facial day to say 'thank you' for the great response to the Fave Fives. I'm not filming again until next week at the earliest because I want to answer as many of your comments first.
In the meantime, I have a long list of ideas/requests for future videos in the same theme, and wanted to give you the opportunity to put your requests in while I'm stacking them up.
Feel free to comment below - I'm looking forward to filming them - and that hasn't happened for the longest time, so thank you for sticking with me - and the inspiration.

*Thanks everyone - have hundreds now so closing comments and taking them down behind the scenes. Stay posted! ;)

Instagram Update

I know a lot of you aren't on Instagram (you should be, it's brilliant!). But: I spend so much time on there showing products and my routines that I thought I'd try and keep regular updates showing anything beauty-related on here also. I'll use it as a precursor to the reviews that follow the trialling.

Clinique discontinued the Mild Clarifying Lotion and replaced it with the 1.0 Clarifying Lotion. Comparison coming on the blog this week.* It's still alcohol-free, don't panic.

Pixi showed their newness including the already-seen Glow Tonic To-Go and brand new Lash Nourish Makeup Remover Pads.

I used up the goop eye cream and the Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture*. The NeoStrata Smooth Surface Pads and Bionic Face Serum* also work brilliantly.

Hair:

  • Davines OI All in One Milk is beautiful. Nourishes, softens, smooths. Brilliant.
  • Bumble & Bumble Full Potential is to be used on the scalp to promote hair growth. So far so good.
  • Ouai Hair Oil is new but lush so far. I've loved everything I've tried from this brand.
  • Philip B Russian Amber Imperial Conditioning Creme is beyond prohibitively expensive, and once this one has gone I don't now if I can justify a new one, but for my knackered, broken hair from last year, I was willing to try anything.
  • SHOW Beauty Working Texture Spray is awesomesauce and not new to any of you. Yes, I'm still using it. Probably always will.
  • Time Bomb Strike a Pose hairspray is new, but good.

  • Simple's new cleansing products coming soon.

Omorovicza's beautiful Queen of Hungary Mist is out in a divine Limited Edition bottle.

Hourglass are releasing this insanely gorgeous Surreal Light Palette in time for Christmas. And yes, that is a marble design.

Mask therapy in the form of:

My Spanish travel bag - skincare:

    Spanish SPF:

    Body travel bag for Spain:

    And yesterday's face!

*Reviews coming this week. ADDITION 29.07.16 - Sorry the reviews didn't happen this week, they are in order and next on the blog. When I can breathe.

I sometimes (not always) use affiliate links. If you are happy to click on the link and support this blog in that way, thank you very much. If you would prefer not to, just google the brand and the item, it's all cool. :)

    Fortune Favours The Brave Palette

Blogging is a funny old thing. Those of us that have been around for a while have seen it go from a keyboard hobby to fully grown businesses for the lucky few. I don't think anyone would have predicted in the early days that bloggers would be writing books, making films, appearing on TV and most exciting for me, collaborating with brands on events, launches and products. Sam and Nic Chapman aka Pixiwoo are behind the biggest-selling brush brand in the world, Real Techniques. Wayne Goss has his own beautiful high-end brushes available through Beautylish. One of the longest standing bloggers in the UK is Jane Cunningham from British Beauty Blogger.
Back in March, Jane and Makeup Revolution quietly released a palette called Fortune Favours the Brave. A 30-pan eyeshadow palette covering everything from shimmers to mattes to mixed shades suitable for all ages, skin colours and tones. The palette's launch and subsequent huge success was driven exclusively by Jane's readership and the online community, receiving no 'press' at all (no surprises there).

Jane's little piece of the internet has since had three sellout runs and this month launched in Ulta in the US.

The joy of blogging is that anyone can do it. It's accessible to everyone. What some people don't always realise and recognise is the amount of hard slog that goes into making it as a successful blogger. It's hours and hours and days and weeks and months and years of persistent and consistent effort. The success of Jane's palette is a success for all of us and the best example of hard work paying off.

It's also a bloody good palette for a ridiculously good price of £9.99/$15.00.

I've yet to see one instore as it is always sold out, but it is available online here:
    UK - Superdrug.com
    USA - Ulta.com

    Congratulations BBB.

Five Facts about Give and Makeup

I know there are a lot of new readers who may not have read about Give and Makeup yet, or long-standing readers who don't mind a gentle reminder, so forgive me if I give it a quick plug now.
    1. We accept anything and everything from clothing to makeup to baby clothing to tampons.
    2. We support Women's Aid, Refuge and CGL. These charities support women and children in/escaping domestic violence situations and people struggling with homelessness, addiction, escaping sex trafficking.
    3. The products are sent directly to the charities involved, they do not go through me.
    4. We are not a charity, we do not accept cash donations. We are a grass-roots initiative.
    5. Your donations have helped thousands of people in the five and a half years we have been going.

    What we still need:
    1. Nationwide coverage and help - we have Wales and Central/West London taken care of. We need locations in the North of England, Brighton, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
    2. PRs - please ask your appropriate brands for donations - anything and everything from old packaging to seconds in clothing.
    3. Brands/Retailers - we'll have your returns/excess stock. Please don't send it to landfill.
    4. If you are a business with a suitable posting address and space to accept parcels, please let us know.
    5. And finally, we are unable to organise anything outside of the UK, please feel free to organise your own version of Give and Makeup in your country. The need is worldwide.

    goop Perfecting Eye Cream

Describe the brand in five words.
Gwyneth. Clean. Toxic (non). Diptyque (packaging). Kale.

That's literally what springs to mind.

    What is it?
'The Perfecting Eye Cream deeply hydrates, soothes and firms the delicate eye area, visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.'

    Who is it for?
    Everyone.

    What’s in it?
Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice*, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Juice*, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Juice*, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice*, Vegetable Oil, Glycerin*, Glyceryl Stearate, Polyglyceryl-6 Tetraoleate, Jojoba Esters, Coconut Alkanes, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Fusanus Spicatus (Sandalwood) Kernel Oil, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Polyglyceryl-6 Distearate, Squalane, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil*, Iris Pallida (Sweet Iris) Leaf Cell Extract, Narcissus Poeticus (Poet’s Daffodil) Flower Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil.
*Certified organic ingredient. This product is formulated with 78% organic content.

    What's not in it?
    Quote:
'goop by Juice Beauty products were formulated without any of a long list of ingredients linked to harmful health effects – including, but not limited to parabens, petroleum, pesticides, propylene or butylene glycols, phthalates, sulfates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMO, silicones, gluten, artificial dyes or fragrances.

    Possibly acne/allergy/troubling for some ingredients?
    Nope.

    Natural? Organic? Man made? Vegan?
    78% organic. Precisely. ;)

Tested on animals/sold in territories that advocate testing?
    No/No

    How does it smell?
Nice. Very, very faintly of weak cucumber, but not in a bad way, and I hate cucumber. The smell disappears almost as soon as it is applied.

How does it feel on the skin?/Absorption rate?
It feels beautiful, absorbs slowly (which an organic product should do) but surely. No residue.

How do you use it?/Where to use in your routine?
The usual, before everything else, after you've cleansed and toned, AM and PM.

How long before you should see results?
Depends on the state of your eyes. If they are dry/dehydrated, you'll see an instant fix. If they are lined, it will relieve the immediate 'look' of the wrinkle, but take longer to smooth out.

How long did I test it for?
    I've emptied the pot.

How much is it? /Size/Approximate cost per usage?
    $90.00 for 15ml.

    What’s good about it?
goop hype be damned, I love this eye cream. It's now up there with Tata Harper in my favourites pile. It hydrates, softens, blurs lines, smells lovely, goes on beautifully, works all day, and doesn't make me puffy. I had major eye surgery over Easter (video and more info coming on that - just haven't had time) and this was one of the creams I chose to use afterwards when they were very delicate and healing.
    Love it.

What’s not so good about it?
The price. It's $90.00. Compared to other high end creams, it's in a similar vein, but when most of the other products in the line are only about 20 bucks more, for double the quantity, its a bit hard to swallow. It also means when it does eventually get to the UK, it'll probably be about £75.00, similar to Zelens and Tata Harper.
Let's just ignore the whole 'non-toxic' thing shall we as I fear I will begin to sound like a broken record?

    Works well with?
Anything. Eye creams are good like that.

    What’s the website like?
Great. It's just an extension of the original goop site, so it's black & white, easy to read, and had all the ingredients without having to click on 7 different links etc.

    Would I purchase/repurchase?
Yes. I've used mine up, on myself and my facial clients, which means asking friends to buy and ship it to me again from the States. Get your arse in gear Gwynnie, we want it over here.

    Similar products?

goop Perfecting Eye Cream is $90.00 for 0.5oz and only available from goop.com because they hate the rest of us and don't care about our problems. :)

New thinking, newer practices - and skincare brands I'm loving

I have so much to blog about I honestly don't know where to start. I cannot tell you how much I am loving the industry at the moment. There is so much great newness coming out of the US in particular, that I can't wait to get it on my face, get it on client's faces, talk about it, talk to retailers about them. It's just exciting. After a couple of years down the *argan oil and sheet masks* black hole (kill me now), it's so welcome.

All of these brands, besides springing out of the West Coast (and beyond) have one thing in common: they all invoke a sense of calm to the skin and mind that seems to fit perfectly in both the current world - and they all blend beautifully into treatment rooms when used in conjunction with hi-tec brands.

Leahlani Skincare is based in Hawaii (as you do) and contains some beautiful serums, oils and and balms, none of which have disappointed thus far. My most-used products in treatments are the Champagne Serum and Bohemian Ruby Balancing Toner.

If you're in the UK you can buy Leahlani at www.reinaorganics.com/leahlani and in the US from www.leahlaniskincare.com

Mahalo Skincare is another Hawaiian-based brand (erm thanks Hawaii!) that comes prepared in beautiful hand carved glass-in-wood packaging and again like Leahlani is made of beautiful raw, natural ingredients that you literally cannot wait to get on your skin. My most-used products are currently Vacation Glow and the Mahalo Balm.

Mahalo is available in the UK from www.alyaka.com and in the US from mahalo.care

OK I know it's not brand new, but: I've nearly used up my goop Perfecting Eye Cream, and I've used either this, or Tata Harper's Restorative Eye Cream on all of my clients, who love both of them. Still not here and they don't ship to the UK (idiots), but I know they are speaking to UK retailers, so hold your breath.

Available in the US only (sigh) from goop.com/perfecting-eye-cream

Josh Rosebrook is based in LA and this Hydrating Accelerator is so beautiful that I almost want to selfishly keep it to myself. You have to smell it to believe it.

He is in select stockists in the US and is available in the UK from abeautifulworld.co.uk/josh-rosebrook

Kypris have been on the blog before but they have just released a couple of new products including a cleanser and SPF, both of which I'm loving so far. The 1000 Roses oil is beautiful for facial massage.

Available in Selfridges and on CultBeauty.com in the UK and their own site for US/overseas kyprisbeauty.com/cleanser

January Labs' Restorative Tonic Mist, along with May Lindstrom's Jasmine Garden, has come to the treatment room with me every week. Its aloe and calendula base make it great for misting pre/during and post treatment. January has also given me exclusive access to her professional peel for use in my treatments.
Available on cultbeauty.co.uk and on January's site: januarylabs.com/restorative-tonic-mist

Treatment talk would not be complete without mention of The Blue Cocoon. It has literally been used on everyone mid/post-treatment (unless contra-indicated) to the same response, which generally involves a low-level, contented exhalation of breath.
The May Lindstrom range is available in a few stockists in the UK including CultBeauty.co.uk and naturisimo.com but there is nothing like receiving the beautifully-wrapped black parcels from the woman herself: maylindstrom.com

Since I've been back in facials I've been using my clients as additional testers (with their knowledge - obviously) and they are also loving what I'm using. I'm always careful what I mix and match, you can't do a serious peel and then rock up with some random serums with conflicting ingredients, so I've been 'tail-ending' with some slightly more natural brands and the results are amazing.

I have more posts planned this week with details of products used in the treatments, including the hi-tec gang, tomorrow.
