Hi Caroline. I have been facing a dilemma. I have extreme combination skin and mild acne. I have previously been prescribed PanOxyl and Quinoderm. The problem is - these creams only seem to work for around a month and then my skin goes berserk again. Should I go and get something stronger or hold out on the creams? Thanks.
I'm not a fan of prescribed creams although I can absolutely see the benefit - I know that sounds strange but its just like you said - its a temporary fix that doesn't always last. I would probably ask you what you use in general and go from there. But if the acne is mild, I would hold out - personally.
Avene is a great range but if that's your routine you need to step it up a bit (a lot) :)
I wouldn't be considering prescribed creams just yet - there are lots of products to use. I will do a quick post on the best thing to do for an acne skin this week - in the meantime if you are a regular reader of this blog you will know what products i always go to. If not - just shout. but you MUST persevere.
Hi Caroline, I love your blog so much - I would be lost without it! Could you recommend a product for scarring (from spots) please? I have oily/combination skin, and I'm in my early 20s. They aren't pitted scars, and I know they could be more severe but spots tend to leave my skin red, blotchy and with scars. Thank you! Jessie
What do you think of the Alpha-H clay mask? and if you like it, which do you prefer, that one or the clarins pink clay one? or is there a third one which take first place? :)
How long time should it take to see results with liquid gold? I have been using it for 1-1½ month and it has helped on my nose but I still have soo much congestion around the mouth/cheek area.. so many bumps under the skin :(
aaand.. what you refer to as flannels, what material is that? is it like tiny towels or?
I have been cleansing with Emma Hardie balm morning and night for the last 1½ month, but I have just bought the Alpha-H balancing cleanser to use in the morning..
They are raised, but they don't have heads like spots.. just bumps.. I don't know if they are red because my skin is a little read all the time.. I have been using the Daprhin Intral toner, but I haven't seen any change.
Hi Caroline, Hi have an embarrasing facial hair issue on my chin/ upper lip and my preferred removal method is epilation/ tweezing (creams irritate my skin and i don't get a neat result when i wax). Can you advise what to use post removal though to prevent spots and ingrown hairs. Thanks so much.
There is a product called Cool Fix that is designed exactly for that. Its 3 acids - it will sting but you'll never get an ingrown hair again. And you're very patient! I shave mine! LOL
Get in :))))))))) woo! Ok, my question is 5-fold lol and it's all about anti ageing
1) what are the risks of someone like me to use an 'anti ageing' cream (I am thinking of the latest one from boots which is targetted at people in their 50's) when i am not 50. Would it beneficial, no point/useless or worse, detrimentary as in I would get my skin used to a richer treatment that it needs 2) what do you think of astaxanthin supplements? is it worth taking as a anti ageing help? 3) what do you think of things like colladeen visage or colladeen derma plus is it worth taking as a anti ageing help? 4) etat pur does this system of pure actives thing, whereby you just put 4 drops of some active ingredient, let's say green tea or hyaluronic acid straight onto your face. Have you got any thoughts of that, is it good or just a waste of money. Link here: http://www.etatpur.co.uk/index.php/pure-actives.html 5) in your anti ageing skin, you recommend glycolic and lactic acids to use as part of your skincare regime to renew the skin (if you have a dry skin anyway) Other than alpha h liquid gold, do you know of any other products (maybe cheaper) who contain either glycolic or lactic acid, as an alternative to 'pricey' liquid gold.
that'll be all for now, lol. thank you, thank you, thank you xx
1, Pointless. Stick to products for your skin type for now. 2, Yes absolutely - but not krill if you are allergic to shellfish like me! :) 3, I prefer to take fish oil, vitamin d and amino acids - but they won't do you any harm. 4, I could see the benefit of say the hyaluronic acid one if you were flying or in hospital etc but in all honesty - I'd rather buy a product that has ll of the ingredients in it that I need. Life is too short. 5, Liquid Gold is not pricey. Anything under £30 is cheap to me. It's for YOUR FACE LILOO!!! Most people spend more than that on a night out. Sorry!
Hi caroline! Thank you SO much for doing this! I have oily skin but under my eyes is quite dry, my concealer clumps really easily and you can see my skin there is dry! I'm using he Lierac eye cream you recommended and nothings happening! Anything else? Thanks so much!! xx
Avoid mineral oil, shea butter, isopropyl myristate, sometimes beeswax is too much also. Avoid foaming products. Big under the skin ones are the worst aren't they?! I tend to clay mask/hydrating mask repetitively on the area until it either shows itself or dies off. Don't pick - you'll scar.
Can a pimple sometimes linger under one's skin, really really deep? And for months and months? Is it better to be patient when that happens? Mine happens to be quite deep in my skin and is a bit discoloured.
Any suggestions on how best to take care of the stubborn thing?
Yes it can - but its probably not a pimple - could be a trapped ingrowing hair, could be a little lesion, a little cyst - hard to say without seeing. Treat as the comment above and nourish. Try things like Neal's Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm.
Firstly - I'm new to your blog and I am addicted!! I'm 26 with fairly dry skin, cleans using your washcloth method and moisturise with la Roche Posey Toleriane Ultra (i have eczema prone skin so can be sensitive at times). What would be the best method of exfoliation for my skin? Is a manual exfoliation ok or a glycolic serum better? And what are your thoughts on the clarins Blue Orchid face oil for an extra dose of hydration? Sorry for the lengthy questions! Myra
It depends on how badly sensitised your skin is. I would say if its bad to just stick to the flannel usage and if it can handle more - move up to aha toners - and if it can handle those - move up to P50w.
Hi Caroline, thank you again for helping us all out with our skincare woes! I have very pale skin and any blemish leaves a pink mark for a while. I've been using Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair to fade these marks and it's worked really well - however from reading other posts it seems you wouldn't recommend it... So basically I'd like to know how come you don't like it and whether there's a different product you'd recommend for fading marks. I use masks with acids which also help but the ANR really seems to shift them fast! Must confess that I am a poor student and have been using a sample size so would really appreciate a purse friendly option!! Oh also I am 19 with combo oily skin easily blocked pores/congested. Thanks Maggie x
I have become and avid reader of your blogs thanks to Viviannadoesmakeup. It is only recently I've become interested in Skincare and would love any advice and recommendations you have.
I'm 22 and have combination skin that is prone to blemishes and enlarged pores. More recently I have noticed my eyes becoming quite dry and some dehydration lines on my forehead.
Your routine looks ok on paper - I would say you don't need Bioderma at night - that can be a little drying (for me) - if you are dry you don't need the Balancing toner - its for comb skin. Use the Clarins oil 3 x a week with the origins over the top at night. Change your cleanser to an oily balm first - then change out other bits you are not happy with.
Hi, I´m using Alpha H LG for the lost few month and I really like - my skin looks amazing and the fine lines are gone. But I still have blackheads on my forehead, nose and chin. I heard that salicylic acid would be better for this kind of problem instead of glycol acid... Is this true? What´s your opinion about that?
Yes technically - although salicylic is really for breakouts as opposed to blackheads. Blackheads are persistent and annoying I know! - are they def blackheads or just enlarged pores?
can you recommend a good AHA toner (which is not P50 since I can't get it) and can I use it in the evenings and in the mornings? Also I'm searching for a good antioxidant serum, can you suggest anything? My cleanser is currently Balancing cleanser from Alpha H, i'm 27 and my skin is normal but I do get shiny nose by the end of the day.
I live in Slovenia (where we have most of the french brands such as Nuxe, Avene, La Roche Posey... no P50 though:))and I order lot's of things from beautybay, look fantastic and feel unique. At the moment my toner is Estee Lauder Perfectly clean Fresh balancing lotion but I read in one of your clinics that you suggest using an AHA toner and a good antioxidant serum. Since anyone could sell me anything I would really aprreciate your advice..
Stick with innocuous gentle products for now and build up your tolerance. You shouldn't have any problem with Emma Hardie cleanser - order it from QVC and then if you DO - you can return it :) A gentle spray toner like Pai or Sjal. Is it genetic? Do your parents suffer from it?
Oh no!! Hope I'm quick enough!! Wrote the whole post once and lost it!!
I'm 43 - fairly dry skin - not too many wrinkles but got a few thread veins which I hate!!
Got my routine fairly sorted - use a mix of Avene and Alpha H cleansers and Eve Lom as a second cleanse. Alpha H absolute eye gel . Avene Hydrance moisturiser in day and Alpha H night cream. Liquid Gold 3 times a week.
I would like advice on oils/ serums - know I should use them but am confused!! What should I use and when?? Am or pm or both? Before my moisturiser/ night cream?? And what about masks? Can you recommend a mask and how often? Can I use a mask on liquid gold nights?
Thank you so much Caroline!! You are a God send and I would send you flowers if I knew where to send them!! So kind to take the time to do this clinic each week!!
If you are dry lose the Eve Lom - switch it for Emma Hardie. As a general guideline - oil at night - serum in the day. Both before moisturiser - the oil can be used alone if directed at night. No mask on LG nights. If you are dry? Skin Ceuticals B5 or Origins moisture mask. And I love flowers! :) LOL
Wondered if you recommend a simple routine for very oily spotty prone 27 year old skin. I'm also interested in anything you could recommend for acne scarring?
Hi just wondering how you rate the emma hardie skincare apart from cleanser? I love the cleanser and am running out of my moisturiser... Yonka pamplemouse. Should i repurchase or try the am pm moisturiser? Or maybe try decleor? I am 35 with combination skin and dehydrated cheeks. Thanks x
I only use the cleanser - I'm afraid I don't use anything else - I had the night cream which is lovely - but a little rich for me at the moment. Comb and dehydrated? I like Decleor. You could do a whole heap worse! :)And they have a new range oilier skins - check that out.
Hi Caroline, I'm a teenager with the standard oily, quite acne-prone skin. My skin is also quite sensitive, so I'm trying to keep my routine as simple as possible. Is there a skincare line in particular you would recommend for young skin? Thank you so much I love your blog!!
Oh f. Even asking you on twitter about your clinic, I'm still late! I only wanted to know (very super speedy quickly) if i am alright to use this on my mug if it has mineral oils in? http://uk.lizearle.com/suncare/mineral-sun-cream-spf20.html
I didn't want to ask you on twitter as thats cheeky and you were watching football ;-)

Should you answer this THANKS!!!! Sorry to be a pain.
Hello Caroline, Love your blog! Anyways I am 20 yrs old with combo skin oily t-zone and dry areas. My question is if you can recommend a good moisturizer for day time? I am using Origins Nite-A-mins for night and I am loving it so far. Any Recommendations would be greatly appreciated:)
Hi Caroline, What do you think of the Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA acne treatment gel? I'm 18 years old with extremely oily, acne prone skin, and I've been using it for a few months now (with a gentle cleanser and toner, and 20% vitamin c serum). While my acne has cleared up quite a bit from how it used to be, I still have at least 4 small-ish spots at all time, plus blackheads on my nose. My skin never gets completely clear, no matter how careful I am. Is there any helping me, or will I just have to wait it out? Thanks, Another Caroline! :)
Not sure if this will go on or not, but, you emailed me in the week and I have now ordered the Heal Gel to try however I have noticed that since I have been taking the fish oil supplements I have been having hot flushes in the evening then when I stop taking them the hot flushes stop this also happened when I took evening primrose oil tablets have you ever known this to happen to anyone else?
Lisa you could have a higher resistance to them - some people can't tolerate them very well. It's a small number but it does happen. by all accounts krill oil is easier on the digestion for people with issues. Maybe try a sample of that and see how you go? Its shellfish though - be warned in case you are allergic.
Hi Caroline. I know it says clinic closed, pretty please would make an exception? I posted 2 weeks ago and u asked if u take supplements. I am take 1800 mg of omega 3 fish oil. Using botanics balm cleanser, caudalie elixir and pai rosehip oil on your advice. Has helped my skin a lot but it still lacks a glow. I also use liquid gold twice a week. Would u please suggest something to give my face a glow? Been on the above routine for 5 months. Thanks a million
Do you use a moisturiser other than Pai? Do you massage with the cleanser? I would up the ante on the fish oil - you could triple it comfortably. I would also invest in a good clay mask - they tend to give you the 'glow' :) Balance Me, Clarins, Alpha-H all do good ones.
I am 20 years old and currently using the Liz Earle cleanse and polish. for moisturizers I currently use the embryolisse cream in the evening and a sample of the liz earle skin repair moisturizer in the daytime as it doesn't make my skin as oily. To be honest I prefer Dermalogica active moist and skin smoothing cream when it comes to moisturizing, so i think i will go back to that when embryolisse and liz earle are used up. I would say I have combination skin (oily t- zone, slightly more dry in the cheeks) as well as being a bit sensitive. I've wanted to start using the caudalie beauty elixir as a toner, but I'm a bit hesitant as it contains grape alcohol? Do you have any suggestions for toners? And also maybe a replacement for the c&p as I've heard that you're not too fond of it? It has improved my skin, but made it somehow dry. My skin seems a little bit unbalanced at the moment as I've been more oily than normal. I'm also thinking of implementing the alpha h liquid gold into my routine. Other than that i take omega 3 and a multivitamin complex. Thanks a lot! :)
The Emb cream is mineral oil based so I would stop that. C & P does cause dryness unfortunately - despite claims to the opposite. I would not worry about the new toner as a priority - I would focus on a new cleanser - my usual recommendations stand - and yes Liquid Gold is good. Moisturiser wise as you are 20 - go for REN. then Caudalie BE. And let me know! :)
Caroline, I posted this before but I think it didnt go through but I have been wanting to ask u for weeks and weeks, always miss the clinic :(. Please tell me what u think of strivectin
Hi, Im sorry this is after the clinic is closed but its just 1 quick question literally before I buy this moisturiser.
Are the alpha h moisturisers with spf 30 and 50 good enough to use as my daily moisturiser?
Its just since using liquid gold Im very aware of using sun cream but using moisturiser then a suncream is making my combination skin oilier. Im 23 by the way.
I'm 28 and starting to get fine lines on my fore-head so wanted your advice as to what anti-ageing products to buy? I have a slightly oily T-Zone but the rest of my face is normal. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Hello Caroline! I love your site and you are so helpful. I noticed in your dailylook video that you shyed away from mineral oil based moisturizers. I tend to do the same but am really interested in trying avene moisturizers? Does the rule still apply for a brand like avene that is supposed to be very gentle?
Hi Caroline.
ReplyDeleteI have been facing a dilemma. I have extreme combination skin and mild acne. I have previously been prescribed PanOxyl and Quinoderm. Heal Gel. Liquid Gold, P50 - All amazing for scarring, healing and pigmentation - although the Liquid Gold Radiance is better for pigmentation.

I love the Alpha - also like Balance Me and Omorovicza. Be led by your budget constraints as clay masks are much of a muchness.

And yes flannels are face cloths. Small towels :)

Ingredients such as Arbutin, Niacinamide and Retin products. Either Retinyl Palmitate or Retinol.

ReplyDeleteI have a question about Rosacea. I'm 34 with very fair, fragile skin with first stage Rosacea.

Hi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteWondered if you recommend a simple routine for very oily spotty prone 27 year old skin. I'm also interested in anything you could recommend for acne scarring?

Acne scarring - Heal Gel. Or Algenist serum.
DeleteProper cleanse - oily balm cleanser
Good toner - Caudalie Beauty Elixir
A good oil-free moisturiser - try REN Calm Clear Range.
Keep me posted! :)

Should you answer this THANKS!!!! Sorry to be a pain.
Hi Sarah!
DeleteNo worries - :)
It doesn't have mineral oil in it. Liz Earle never uses mineral oil. Its a mineral sunscreen - completely different - crack on! :)
Hello Caroline,
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! Anyways I am 20 yrs old with combo skin oily t-zone and dry areas. My question is if you can recommend a good moisturizer for day time? I am using Origins Nite-A-mins for night and I am loving it so far. Any Recommendations would be greatly appreciated:)
I would go to Ren personally. I know I'm recommending them a lot at the moment - but for price point and range they are hard to beat.
DeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of the Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA acne treatment gel? I'm 18 years old with extremely oily, acne prone skin, and I've been using it for a few months now (with a gentle cleanser and toner, and 20% vitamin c serum). While my acne has cleared up quite a bit from how it used to be, I still have at least 4 small-ish spots at all time, plus blackheads on my nose. My skin never gets completely clear, no matter how careful I am. Is there any helping me, or will I just have to wait it out?
Thanks,
Another Caroline! :)
Caroline are you in the US?
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this will go on or not, but, you emailed me in the week and I have now ordered the Heal Gel to try however I have noticed that since I have been taking the fish oil supplements I have been having hot flushes in the evening then when I stop taking them the hot flushes stop this also happened when I took evening primrose oil tablets have you ever known this to happen to anyone else?
Thanks Lisa
Lisa you could have a higher resistance to them - some people can't tolerate them very well. It's a small number but it does happen. by all accounts krill oil is easier on the digestion for people with issues. Maybe try a sample of that and see how you go? Its shellfish though - be warned in case you are allergic.
DeleteHi Caroline.
ReplyDeleteI know it says clinic closed, pretty please would make an exception? I posted 2 weeks ago and u asked if u take supplements. I am take 1800 mg of omega 3 fish oil. Using botanics balm cleanser, caudalie elixir and pai rosehip oil on your advice. Has helped my skin a lot but it still lacks a glow. I also use liquid gold twice a week. Would u please suggest something to give my face a glow? Been on the above routine for 5 months. Thanks a million
P.S: I'm 32 if its any help
DeleteDo you use a moisturiser other than Pai?
DeleteDo you massage with the cleanser?
I would up the ante on the fish oil - you could triple it comfortably.
I would also invest in a good clay mask - they tend to give you the 'glow' :)
Balance Me, Clarins, Alpha-H all do good ones.
No moisturiser other than Pai oil. Yes I massage twice a week with the cleanser. I ordered Balance Me clay mask as soon as I read this. Thank you.
DeleteHi Caroline.
ReplyDeleteI am 20 years old and currently using the Liz Earle cleanse and polish. for moisturizers I currently use the embryolisse cream in the evening and a sample of the liz earle skin repair moisturizer in the daytime as it doesn't make my skin as oily. :)
Lots of love,
Caroline.
Hi Caroline,
DeleteThe Emb cream is mineral oil based so I would stop that.
ReplyDeleteNot a lot. LOL Sorry - short and sweet.
DeleteAnd pls tell us why u don't like liquid gold serum...pretty please...
ReplyDeleteIts not that I don't like it - I just prefer using the original LG.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteIm sorry this is after the clinic is closed but its just 1 quick question literally before I buy this moisturiser.
Are the alpha h moisturisers with spf 30 and 50 good enough to use as my daily moisturiser?
Its just since using liquid gold Im very aware of using sun cream but using moisturiser then a suncream is making my combination skin oilier. Im 23 by the way.
Thank you so much!
Yes. :)
Deletepurchased :)
Deletethank you guru hirons!
I know I'm too late, but I was wondering whether you could do a post in preventing and removing blackheads? x
ReplyDeleteI can but there is nothing that new to say on the subject. I'll add it to the list though! :)
DeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteI'm 28 and starting to get fine lines on my fore-head so wanted your advice as to what anti-ageing products to buy?
I have a slightly oily T-Zone but the rest of my face is normal.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Anita
Hello Caroline! I love your site and you are so helpful. I noticed in your dailylook video that you shyed away from mineral oil based moisturizers. I tend to do the same but am really interested in trying avene moisturizers? Does the rule still apply for a brand like avene that is supposed to be very gentle?
