A love letter to Beauty Departments

After the atrocious 'service' (and I use the word loosely) I had the misfortune of experiencing at Boots recently, I've been even more aware of customer service - or lack thereof - across the board.
Surely in this online age and with the 'grab-n-go' mentality that seems to be here to stay, it doesn't mean that we're forgetting how to deal face-to-face with customers? Or are we now simply cutting out human interaction altogether?
It's one thing to offer self-select beauty and self-service tills. It's quite another to make that the only option available to your customers*.

'UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA' I hate you.

I can see that there is a desire for some self-service tills in busy stores to relieve pressure on tills and offer an alternative for people who have no desire to chit-chat and need to get back to their desk. I mean, I won't use them, but I can see that they have their place. More so when it comes to a sandwich and crisps at lunch.

For me, they will never, ever replace human interaction and traditional 'customer service'. Because that's what it's about, your customer. Not your bottom line, not your shareholder, your customer.
You could look at it and say self-service tills save money. Personally I look at them and see the members of staff they've replaced. Don't tell me that you can't afford staff. You can. You just have to make less profit. And who knows? Maybe if you offered the service, you'd make more money, and keep your shareholders and your customers happy.

I'm in the middle of reading Estee Lauder's 'A Success Story'. I love a good biography/industry book. Yes, it's a book about how she built her business, but she mentions 'customers' on nearly every page. This is a brand built on service. (As an aside, she also throws some brilliant, funny, shade on her competitors and it is well worth a read. It's available here.)

The holding of a customer's hand is classic Lauder technique.

Mrs Lauder doing her thing.
Selfridges Beauty Hall of old.

Selfridges today

I have always loved a good beauty hall. I can wander for hours, literally whole days, looking at what's new, including the fixtures and new counters, new brands and the most fun for me, people watching. I love watching the interaction between sales people and customers. It's my thing. I get it. It seems weird if it's not your thing. But I love it. Admittedly, I may be biased. I was raised around beauty counters.

Mum doing her thing in her first beauty job in Liverpool in the 60s.

Nana doing her thing on a different counter in the 60s.

Whenever I travel, the first place I hit is the department stores. In New York I can spend an entire day doing Bergdorfs and Barneys beauty halls. Another day doing the Ulta/Target/Duane Reade Holy Trinity.
I love beauty, I love (most) people, I love beauty customers, I love beauty teams. That experience cannot be replaced with a till that shouts at you about unexpected items in a baggage area.

Beauty halls in huge department stores have massively upped their game and continue to do so. The competition from online is fierce, so you need to give people a reason to walk through your doors.
The main one for me will always be the experience. Dealing with knowledgeable staff, holding everything in my hand, trying it on my skin, swatching powders, trying lipsticks, reading ingredients labels, talking to the staff, it's all part of the fun.

Adding apothecary-style units to beauty halls in department stores has, for me, added to the entire experience, because you will still have to pay for it at a till with a live, human being manning it. All of the self-select areas of beauty have staff in them that are trained in the brands on offer. It's the modern way to do beauty.

On top of that, we now have services. All of them.

Harvey Nichols Beauty Lounge

Harvey Nichols London recently opened their Beauty Lounge, offering hair, nails, brows, lashes, henna, infusions, three beauty rooms and LED therapy. It's insane. A dedicated entrance means it's literally open dawn til dusk. It's a one-stop shop if you have an event.

Liberty recently refurbed their beauty halls, making even more room for the beautiful niche brands they are famous for. Byredo, Frederic Malle, Surratt, Le Labo, just a few of the standouts, and now Skin Laundry has arrived fresh from L.A. offering 15 minute laser & light facial for busy people on the go. Facials and a Blink Bar mean you can fix your face from top to bottom in a couple of hours.

Liberty in all it's glory.

Selfridges also has everything. Face, hair, body, brands, nails. The whole caboodle.

I love it. I love all of it. Every time I walk through a beauty hall is like the first time.

The new Liberty hall.

No, it's not always perfect, yes, staff have bad days and can be obnoxious and not very well-trained. But I'd rather a person having a bad day that can be trained than a wall of machines any day.

*Twitter friends will be aware that I recently tried to spend money (the pre-holiday shop) in Boots to be faced with only self-service tills, no human beings were available. Literally. A manager pointed to the self-service machines as if I was an alien while he did paperwork on his clipboard and said 'the tills aren't open'. I attempted the self-serve tills and when it started giving me grief about unexpected items in the bagging area on the third item, I lost all patience. I left it all there. Walked out. They watched me leave the shop (kids in tow) rather than open a till to serve me. I wasn't being a diva. That's not me. I was being a busy, stressed-out customer, keeping kids amused while we shopped everything from skincare to suncream to hairspray to deodorant and tampax. We went to Superdrug for the essentials and I bought the rest from dept stores.

If your store is open, your tills should be open.

Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb 10th Anniversary Limited Edition bottle - get it while you can!

If you follow my Instagram or watch my vlogs you'l know I had tea with Viktor&Rolf recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Flowerbomb. I can't believe it's been 10 years.

Flowerbomb is one of my favourite perfumes and certainly in my Top 5 of all time. It's also Mr Hirons' favourite, so it's always in my birthday and Christmas presents. Fans of the brand will know that a limited edition is brought out every Christmas and this year's is particularly lovely.

The only problem with limited editions being that I collect them rather than use them. But never mind. :)

Available exclusively from all Selfridges stores and Selfridges.com priced £73.00 while stocks last.

Happy Birthday Flowerbomb!

Muji In-store appearance - Tuesday 16th June

To celebrate the launch of Muji's great new skincare line, I am popping along to their store inside Selfridges Oxford Street next week.

What you need to know:

  • The event runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on TUESDAY 16TH JUNE in the Muji store in Selfridges Lower Ground Floor.
  • Attendees will receive 20% off ALL Muji stock during the evening. (Can anyone say STORAGE?)
  • The first 30 customers in the queue will receive a Muji Goodie Bag

This will probably be my last appearance before I break for the summer holidays so do come along and grab me while you can.
(Not literally, that would be borderline inappropriate.)

MUJI Skincare

Well this is certainly going to please a lot of my lovely readers. Especially those with sensitivity to fragrance and those of you on tight budgets. *calling all students*

MUJI, home of all beauty bloggers favourite storage, have relaunched their skincare and it shows great promise. It is fragrance, alcohol, paraben, dye and mineral oil free. Although that alone makes it attractive, the price point and sheer value of the products mean it is worth checking out for everyone, not just those mentioned.

Coming from the Far East, it advocates double cleansing, has a selection of essences and even sheet masks (YAY!).

There are three collections, Cleansing, Sensitive and High Moisture and prices start at £3.95 and go up to a whopping (she says sarcastically) £14.95 for the High Moisture Essence Lotion. Don't worry about the descriptions either, the soaps aren't 'soaps' of old, they're not loaded with SLS.
The Moisturising Essence for Eye Contour - second tube from the left in the picture above is worth checking out at £10.95 for 30ml.

I've added various items from the High Moisture range to my shelves and will report back but in the meantime, at these prices and sizes, it's worth checking out for yourself right now.

Your only immediate challenge is that it is exclusive to Selfridges for 3 months.

Selfridges Beauty Workshop Birmingham

This weekend I visited the brand new Beauty Workshop in Selfridges, Birmingham to meet some readers and generally indulge in a day of beauty.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see me and nag about skincare. The store is beautiful (and surprisingly big) and the staff are brilliantly welcoming, passionate and knowledgeable.

Selfridges' brilliant Personal Beauty Shopper Rose.

I have no idea what I am doing in this pic.

No clue what's occurring here either.

So Midlands peeps: if you are in need of a quick hair fix, a manicure, some beautiful niche brands that may not be as well known as the 'usual suspects' but still pack a punch, head to the Beauty Workshop. They stock more than a few of my faves including Ole Henriksen, Perricone, Time Bomb, Bio Effect and Aesop to name a few.

For more info on booking a consultation with the Personal Shopping Beauty Team email here.

Charlotte Tilbury's Makeup House of Rock 'N' Kohl - and moi.

I'm sure you've seen in the press and on blogs that Charlotte Tilbury has set up shop in Selfridges this week until Sunday with makeovers, great beauty treats and evening panel discussions. I popped in today and it was packed. PACKED.

I'm joining Charlotte and her team on Thursday afternoon for a meet-up/catch-up/hang out - whatever you like to call it.

I'll be in store from around 2.30pm onwards. If you didn't get a chance to come to the recent Selfridges event or couldn't get tickets for the one-to-one's - now's your chance.

Bring your skincare, bring your face, we'll get cracking. (you don't actually have to bring your skincare, but it's probably best you bring your face eh?)

Would love to see you.

Charlotte Tilbury's House of Rock 'N' Kohl is open until Sunday 23rd June.

Selfridges event - just me, lovely readers and thieving swines.

This Thursday I was lucky enough to meet a lot of readers at Selfridges Beauty Workshop. I just want to say a huge thank you to all of you that queued for 3 hours just so I could offer you advice/rant/abuse your choices/pick your blackheads (it was a really good one - what can you do?)

I'm so appreciative to each and every reader of this blog and cannot believe how lucky I am to do what I love - both at work and on this site.

An extra special thank you to the Ladies who came back in after this happened:

At 8.30pm on the dot 10 men held a smash'n'grab in Selfridges Wonder Room - leading to possibly the worst panic I've seen in my years of retail.

How very dare they.

When we were allowed back in the building a little while later we carried on as if nothing had happened - albeit a little shaken. Kudos to the Selfridges staff who were impeccable in both their concern for their customers and communication afterwards.

All in all not an entirely dull occasion.

Thank you Selfridges for having me - especially Barbarella Barbie, Stephanie and the shop floor staff on the night.

Meet-up in Selfridges Oxford Street - Thursday 6th June 6pm to 9pm

Hi Everyone!

If you're around this Thursday evening in the West End I am popping in to the Beauty Workshop in Selfridges to hang out for a few hours, talk to all and sundry about skincare and the beauty industry and generally cause a big little commotion.

Do pop in if you get a chance, I would love to put some faces to names.

*Please note - although I will obviously be answering as many questions as possible on the night - this is a shop floor appearance and won't be the same as my private one-to-one consultations. It'll be good fun though!

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign October 2011 #BCAUK

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK.
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime.

I have had two serious scares myself, I have one friend in the middle of treatment and having her operation TODAY (we love you Amica) and  my oldest and best friend has just completed her treatment for breast cancer diagnosed earlier this year.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there are a number of things you can do to show your support.

Sitting nicely alongside #BCAUK, tomorrow sees the annual Look Good Feel Better Beauty Editors Day  in Selfridges Beauty Hall from 12pm through to 7pm. For £20 - the entire proceeds of which go to LGFB - you can meet a top beauty editor, seek advice, pick their brain or just ask endless questions (take a list!), get a mini-makeover and a goodie bag - there are still spaces available - call 0800 138 8140 for appointments.

At 12pm over on the Estee Lauder counter Elizabeth Hurley, long-established Lauder spokeswoman and Breast Cancer Awareness Ambassador, will be making an appearance meeting customers and signing purchases from the Estee Lauder Pink Ribbon Collection  (so don't rock up with an Austin Powers DVD please).
Busy day all round for Ms Hurley as she's popping back at 8pm to turn Selfridges Pink in the Estee Lauder tradition which last year, broke the Guinness World Record for 'Most Landmarks Illuminated for a Cause in 24 Hours'. Impressive. Actually beyond impressive - pretty phenomenal.

Niagara Falls

Empire State

They even turned Jesus pink.
In the 19 years since Evelyn Lauder started the Estee Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign they have given away nearly 110 million pink ribbons worldwide and by the end of this October will have donated nearly $50 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

This year's campaign is:
TOGETHER. Connect. Communicate. Conquer. For A Future Free of Breast Cancer.
Evelyn Lauder says, “Together we are stronger. Together we can do more. Together we can find a cure.

Amen.

I will be posting more about available products and other events through the next few days but in the meantime - a reminder to all - applications open online tomorrow morning at 9am for next year's Moonwalk.
Spaces fill up very quickly and next year I'll be doing my first Moonwalk - WITH my best friend. So stand by to be hit up for sponsorship and gratuitious pictures of us in our bras.

Whatevs: it WAS the 80's!
More information on the Moonwalk here. I hope to see you there.
