Cleanse, Tone & Moisturise - Tanya Burr

My first victim guest for Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise is Tanya Burr - You Tuber extraordinaire and all-round lovely lady. A fully trained makeup artist, Tanya has previously worked for Laura Mercier and Clinique and her YouTube channel currently receives over a million hits a month.

The whole point of this feature is to get products on to the blog that may otherwise not have made it - although I trial new products all the time, I'm pretty set in my ways when it comes to basics - so why not open it up a little?
I thought I'd pick Tanya's brain as she's (clearly) much younger than me and her skin is totally different...

Just a reminder that the the question is: What are your default 'go-to' products for the 3 basic steps?...

Tanya's choices are....

Cleanser - Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish

I have been using this cleanser for the past 2 years and although being a beauty vlogger/blogger I try lots of different cleansers, I always come back to this one and find nothing beats it. It gently but thoroughly removes all my makeup including eye makeup and the muslin cloth polishes away any dead skin without being abrasive like a scrub might be.

This product was recommended to me when I had a facial at a spa last Summer. The lady said it would help to tighten my pores and balance the oily and dry areas on my skin, I have to say it did exactly what she said - and that is why I love it!

Although like I said before I try out lots of different products, I have stayed pretty loyal to this moisturiser for the last 4 years! That is a long time for me to stay in love with a product, but this one is truly amazing. Benefits I see from this cream are, evenly hydrated, soft, clear and even skin. It's just incredible.

Thank you Tanya! - next up: London Makeup Girl

Beauty News Round-up

This week's round-up - starting with...

  • Stop the Press! Next Friday - 10th, Emma Watson - Hermione herself, is doing a P.A. in Selfridges as part of her role as Lancome Ambassador and Face of the brand. She's there to launch her new collection of lipsticks and nail polishes called Rouge in Love and Vernis in Love respectively. Prepare to be squashed to death by screaming Harry Potter fans.
Selfridges Oxford Street - 4.30pm. Friday 10th February.

  • Origins launch Youthtopia Lift today. Designed to help skins affected by stress, age, fatigue and lack of hyaluronic acid (moi) - it uses Commiphora Mukul - a key plant ingredient used in ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years. 92% of their testers said their skin was 'lifted and firmer'. That'll do.
My favourite part of Origins packaging? This bit:
    Origins products are formulated WITHOUT:
Parabens  ● Phthalates  ● Propylene Glycol  ● Mineral Oil  ● PABA  ● Petrolatum
Paraffin ● DEA ● Animal Ingredients (except cruelty-free honey and beeswax)
Doesn't it look nice to see that? Youthtopia is £48.00.

  • Deborah Mitchell launches her Eye version of her infamous Bee Venom Mask exclusively through NutriBeauty this week, priced at £55.00. A natural alternative to botox - she has taken the 'sting' part of the mask and added river silt - rich in  minerals, enzymes and marine collagen to feed, firm, tighten and rejuvenate. I kinda need that all over.
  • The stunning cologne 4711 is sponsoring Matthew Williamson at LFW 2012. Frankly it's about time this unisex cult classic was put in front of people in a more pro-active manner. Never smelt it? It's citrus-y, think James Bond wears Aqua di Parma.
Interesting sidebar: this is the first time I've linked to a wikipedia page for a product. Told you it was a classic.
  • Also launching is Wild - a bright, bold and fresh initiative proving that Fair Trade doesn't have to be brown, dull and drab. Taking oils directly from ethically sourced and sustained suppliers from Africa, they have beautiful body butters and soaps that won't break the bank and make great gifts.
  • Speaking of Africa - this week pureDKNY launch their latest collaboration with CARE International - an organisation that aims to empower and lift women out of global poverty. *stands up, claps*
A Drop Of Verbena not only donates £1.00 per bottle to CARE, it sources the verbena directly from farmers in Togo to help sustain the local community. Can I get an AMEN?
Watch this video featuring the face of DKNY Angela Lindvall for more info about the work DKNY are doing with CARE.

Good work DK peeps.

  • Fast on the heels of RapidLash comes RapidBrow - the gift from the Gods for over-pluckers everywhere.

  • Your eyebrows are the coat hangers for your face - if yours look like old wire hangers from the dry cleaners instead of sturdy fabulous wooden ones from Peter Jones haberdashery department (trust me), you may wanna look this up. Exclusive to Boots - £37.00
  • Dove Spa have launched their Real Local Beauty campaign. Open to all ages and sizes you can nominate a friend or enter yourself if you fancy your chances. Prizes of up to £250 are on offer along with the chance to appear in their advertising campaigns and in the windows of Dove Spas across the country.  To enter email realbeauty@dovespa.co.uk. Entries close 17th Feb.
  • Can we all take a minute to bow before the altar of NARS and these gorgeous previously-exclusive-to-Selfridges-now-in-SpaceNK new glosses?  He's basically giving us a super-pigmented-crack-version of his original glosses in THE most amazing, bright, beautiful colours. I suggest you go now and investigate Norma - pictured above. No I don't suggest, I HIGHLY suggest. £19.00

  • Speaking of bowing, my old favourite Doctor P as usual, is at the forefront of his game and has released a Hypoallergenic Collection for those of us with sensitive skin - for whatever reason. I love this man and I trust him implicitly. No he's not cheap, but if you want cheap I suggest you go and use something for £2.00 on 3 for 2 in Boots and come back to me when your face is falling off. Yeah. That's what I thought.
Starting with a cleanser, eye cream, peptide complex and moisturiser it is priced between £34 and £80 and is available online and on Perricone counters. Review to follow.
  • Coach launched its latest fragrance - Poppy this week. Fruity and floral, it's the perfect escape as we get SNOW forecast. Priced from £29.00 at Debenhams, Harrods and selected stockists.

  • Balance Me launch their skincare Try-Me kit on QVC on Sunday 5th at 6pm and 10pm. Priced at £22.50 it contains trial sizes of both cleansers, Radiance Face Oil, Moisture-Rich Face Cream, Wonder Eye Cream and Stellar Face Balm. Tune in at 6pm - it's bound to sell out.

  • And finally - be careful what you wish for. Stila launching online with SpaceNK in March. HELL YEAH!

Eye Creams - Reviews and Recommendations

Following on from the Cheat Sheet the below are just a few of my favourites. If you have any specific questions about a particular cream feel free to comment.

Best for travelling/tired eyes
Lierac Diopti Calm - £17.50 - Selfridges and good chemists
This is my go-to whenever I'm getting on a plane/just got off a plane/doing long distance rail/road travel. It's moisturising, cooling and hydrating - which is what you want taken care of in those circumstances. Great after a long hard day's work.

Good for dryness/moderate wrinkles
Origins Plantscription - £35.00 - all Origins stockists and online
Origins newest eye cream is a lovely light texture, absorbs really well and is really good under makeup. Good for dark circles. One gripe - I would like it in a tube or pump dispenser please. The texture is such that it can be accommodated thus, so a pot seems unnecessary in 2011. Good, affordable cream though - so don't be put off.

Best for baggy/puffy eyelids
Perricone MD Acyl-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum - £95 - Harrods and Selfridges from January 2012
If you are a 'woman of a certain age' (me) and have noticed that along with everything else - your eyelids are rapidly heading south (me) this new serum from Perricone is brilliant. It instantaneously tightens the lid area - I noticed a difference across the lid within around 25 seconds. The only area it did not affect was the fatty deposits in the outside folds of the lid (I know - gross) but the only thing that can treat those is a knife. And I'm not quite ready for that yet.

Best Value for Money and Packaging
Monu Collagen Eye Cream - £22.50 - Monu Shop.co.uk
This is joint first for packaging. Light, controllable pump, small enough for travel and handbag - perfect. I would recommend this as a good cream for someone in their mid 20's/30's. Contains arnica, marine extracts and evening primrose oil - great feel on the skin - this is my 'I don't really have any one major concern today' cream.

Best for older, wrinkled, dried up eyes - The 'I'm older, more wrinkled and can afford it' cream
Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Eye Cream - £230 - SpaceNK
OK - firstly - yes it's £230. No I did not buy it. I had a handful of samples. But let me tell you this: if you can afford it, and you are older and suffer from a typical crêpey, ageing, dry eye - then this should be your first port of call. This feels like luxury on the skin - you do not need this is if you are under 35/40 (younger if you smoke) - but if you are my age or older this is divine. Absolutely divine. Contains gold particles and is massively anti-inflammatory and healing - when I put this on my eyes literally go 'aaaahhhhhhhhhh'. Bliss. If you can afford it.

Best Feel on the skin and Joint Best Packaging
Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair Cream - £123.00 - SpaceNK
This is my current favourite. Perfect packaging - including a window on the side to see when you are running out - which by the way - is one of the MOST requested things from customers on the shop floor - why more brands don't offer this I do not know - controllable dispenser and airtight. I look forward to cleansing so that I can apply this. Makes my eyes glow, gets rid of my lines and visibly reduces puffiness. Again - it's not cheap - but if you are in your 40's and your eyes show it - this is really wonderful. A joy to use.

Lancome Renergie Eye - £44.50 - all Lancome stockists
Mum's favourite. In her words - 'Amazing - If I can see a difference then it bloody well works miracles! Makes my eyes smoother, calmer and the concealer helps my dark circles.' Mum may not look it but she's in her 60's and suffers from a chronic illness so this is pretty much the word of Jesus. Recommended and much loved.

A couple of points worth mentioning:
  • Most reputable brands provide samples - in the case of Chantecaille and Somerville, Harrods, Fenwick, Liberty and SpaceNK have samples - if you are spending that much - try it first!
  • If no samples are available and you are at the counter - squeeze some out and put it on your eyes over makeup - at least you'll know if you are allergic before you buy...
  • Once again - stay away from mineral oil. Makes your eyes puffy and congests the area. If you are prescribed a heavy cream for dermatitis/eczema that contains a lanolin that is different - but it's too heavy in normal circumstances
  • Don't forget the previous advice about bismuth oxychloride - avoid if you are prone to allergies
And a final word on the cost of skincare products in general. I'm constantly asked for recommendations for 'something cheaper' by some readers. I don't generally blog about cheaper products (for facial skincare) because I don't really use them.
I read some of the same people on twitter saying they have bought a new dress/pair of shoes from New Look (for example) and saying 'it was only £25.00!' Why won't you spend that on your face?

Here's my theory: Spend on your skincare what you would spend on a good pair of shoes or a good handbag and you'll be ok. People tend to have shoes and handbags relevant to their financial situation.
Clothes and accessories come and go but you only get one face.
