I sent out a tweet a couple of weeks ago that became one of my most RT'd ever.
It had been on my mind after the first couple of weeks of skin consults where the majority of people who came to see me said that they cleansed their skin before they went to bed, not when they got home.
So I thought it worth repeating on here as a lot of readers aren't on twitter:
Cleanse your skin and remove your makeup when you get home, NOT when you go to bed.
As a typical example, if you get home at 6 and go to bed at 11, that's 5 hours of grime, sweat, makeup and general dirt on your face for another 5 hours. If you get rid of it as soon as you go home your skin is luxuriating in oils/balms/nighttime treatments for an extra FIVE hours (as an example).
Take everything off when you get home, go about your evening, then when you go to bed check your skin. If everything has absorbed you can add a little more of the heaviest product you used, in my case, facial oils or balms, before you get in bed. You are aiming for a happy, glowing skin, not a greasy slimy face.
I promise you - if you aren't doing this already, you will see immediate results from this one simple change.
And those of you who have said you don't want your partner to see you without makeup. Get a grip. And possibly a new partner. JUST SAYIN'.
I've often wondered about this, actually. I had some sad belief that I needed to wash my face as close to bed time as possible or else--I'm not sure what I thought would happen. My face would get dirty before going to sleep? Don't know. Regardless, it's great to get clarity on this point. Thanks! (And thanks for the chuckle I got from your last paragraph--just sayin'!)
ReplyDeleteGet it off! LOL
DeleteI'm the same SoSuSam! Regrettably by the time I've decided it's bedtime the wine *sometimes* makes me forget to clean my face at all!!!!!
DeleteTake your wine to the bathroom with you. I *may* have done this myself. I'm saying nothing.
DeleteNow why didn't I think of that! Thank you, just need to make sure I don't mistake Liquid Gold for Chardonnay ...
DeleteCompletely agree about the cleansing when you get home. Especially if you live in a city. All that grime on your face for longer than it has to? No thanks!
ReplyDeleteIf girls are that insecure about their partner seeing them without makeup, they have bigger issues going on that no amount of cleanser in the world is going to help with!
I understand if its your first *sleepover* ! :)
DeleteHi sweety, please please help me witb your to the point advice! I have been prescribed 'Duac once daily' for mild very mild acne. Butttttt whoahhh its sucking the like out my skin, my skin is tight and dry scaly bleughhhhhh. Helpppp. Ive tried oils and even sun cream to help but it has done no good :( xxx
ReplyDeleteYou need facila oil galore -not much else you can do - supplementing fish oil?
DeleteOf facial oil. Not quite sure what facila oil is to be honest.
DeleteThanks Caroline ! Which oil would you recommend? Ive just been slapping on bio oil :/
DeleteThat's the problem then, because bio oil has (loads of) mineral oil, just go on the search box and write mineral oil to read everything that Caroline has written about it.
DeleteGo for natural oils and Hydraluron + moisturiser (without mineral oil).
X
I totally agree!!! I once saw an interview with Charlotte Tilbury where she revealed that her husband has never seen her without makeup and she wears makeup to BED! LOL so pathetic! I don't want to be with someone who doesn't love me for who I am! I'm glad you posted about this subject!
ReplyDeleteGet it off!
DeleteAnd for the record the word I used to Charlotte was indeed: FILTH. :)
DeleteOMG I read that article too and I thought how strange! Her skin must be gross! X
DeleteLollll FILTH!
DeleteWhat a great tip! Seriously something I never even thought about until now. Thank you again Caroline!!
ReplyDeleteI never thought about it like that, makes sense though :) x
ReplyDeletewww.picturenoergaard.blogspot.com
Oh! I'm going to try this starting today! How fun! And also, I appreciate the fact that you use "partner" instead of "husband" or "boyfriend" or "man" or any such term. It's a small marker of inclusion for those of us that at are not inclined to procure one of those. And that's honestly a rarity in the beauty v/blog world, believe it or not! So thank you, again!
ReplyDeleteYou're V welcome! :)
DeleteGreat post! I try to cleanse as soon as I get home, and I feel like it really does make a difference, but sometimes I am just too lazy to do it right away, especially if I know that I will probably have to go out again later in the evening, it just doesn´t seem worth it to redo my entire makeup, which I actually probably should on those days. But in general, I think it is always best to take off everything as soon as I get home. You always have great advice, especially the one about your partner seeing you without makeup ;) haha, so true
ReplyDeletehttp://coralissignature.blogspot.de
What a good idea, why didn't I think of that :)
ReplyDeletePaula at Beauty Lover
I'l definitely bare this in mind, I'm often too lazy to do this as soon as I get home but it totally makes sense! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteRoshni’s Journey
Thanks for this. I do tend to keep my makeup on until closer to bedtime but I will not try taking it off as soon as I get home.
ReplyDeletekatespitz.blogspot.com
Will defnitely follow your advice on this one. I can't believe how much better my skin is looking since I started reading your blog.
ReplyDeleteI second this! Reading your blog has made me change the way I treat my skin, and it's so much better for doing so. Thanks Caroline!
DeleteThird this! Now I treat my skincare like I do a prescription, about which I am always painstakingly fastidious (as in calculating the precise time to take each dose). So why not be so attentive with my skin? And yay to new partner if one needs one!
DeleteAh I'm so pleased!!! That's why I do this blog. Thanks for letting me know Ladies. I really appreciate it. xx
DeleteHahahaha :) I just adore you. You sound like my family (african family don't measure their words). Thanks for everything you share with us. Agreed. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL - this is me HOLDING BACK. :) x
DeleteWOW! I never thought of this. I take off makeup at the end of every single day religiously, but never as soon as I get home... Thanks for this great tip Caroline :)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to ask you this, few skincare items that I recently added to my routine did wonders to my skin when I first started using them, but they dont produce the same effect anymore, they still make skin soft, hydrated etc but just not as much as before. What does this really mean? Have they stopped working on me?
No it just means your skin really needed them at the beginning. :) They don't stop working. x
DeleteThank you so much Caroline... So glad to hear :D
DeleteI started to do this after I saw your tweet and I love it! I've noticed some really nice results. Thank you, Caroline!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I've been waiting to clean my skin until bedtime because I thought that was what I was supposed to do. I will change it at once!
ReplyDeleteGet it off!
DeleteBrilliant! Love your sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteMiss Caroline - I do follow you on twitter (I will follow you everywhere :P) and its a very effective tip. I try and follow it religiously now
ReplyDeleteMe and my husband are planning to start a family, If I could please get your approval on the products I'm currently using weather they are safe to use during pregnancy.
Exfoliators- LG, P50, clarins brightening toner
Serums - SOS, ANR, kate's quench and Elemental Herbology lighten & brighten
Facial oils - Pai rosehip, Nude skincare pure genius, Josie Maran 100% aragon oil and tarte pure maracuja
Treatments - Skinceuticals blemish + age defense
I use them all on rotation.
I have a combination/very clogged/acne prone skin. age 29
I asked you on twitter if my skin could benefit from PMD as I'm battling post/current acne scarring. I had also shared a picture with you.
I completely and blindly follow you recommendations. I have noticed a major improvement in my skin from your blog.
Thank you for your service :)
PS. Love you, your work, your humor and your face :D (i'm sure you get this a lot but you really really have an AWESOME SKIN)
That's all fine. In all honesty the %'s used in over the counter products are so low that they won't cross the placenta. Stay away from Vitamin A (strong forms - which would be listed) and some essential oils - which again would be listed. But in general - you're good.
DeleteThank you for the reply. Im so glad I can use all my products and feel pampered!
DeleteI was most concerned about Liquid gold, P50 and salicylic treatment by Skinceuticals blemish + age defense.
Do you think I should invest in PMD. Nothing seems to help my clogged cheeks and chin area?
I want my soft and spotless skin back which I had when I was in India :(
No. And if you're planning on a bambino - no. Take it easy, don't stress, see what happens when and if you get pregnant.
Deleteokay... I sure can wait and play my products! ;)
DeleteThank you Caroline.
Ok I might b being a bit thick here but I get home from work at 330 but I take the dogs out at 7 now do I cleanse when I get home from work or do I cleanse when I get back from taking dogs out because I was thinking if i did it before taking dogs out my skin will get dirty again x help x
ReplyDeleteI have the same question. I make dinner later n since im an indian, while cooking Indian food I feel my skin gets an oil film since oil spatters all over my face and feel I do need to cleanse after that.
DeleteIts confusing!
Anon - cleanse when you get home from taking the dogs.
DeleteNicki - cleanse after cooking.
Thank u soooo much my skin is so much better from reading your blog now and again I get a white head but nothing like I use to get so happy with my skin u r a miracle worker :-) :-) xxx
DeleteWould it be a good idea if I get home, just use some micellar water to remove the makeup as soon as possible, and then afer cooking do the entire "ritual", cleaning, toning and all the rest? Or is it better to do all at on time? (sorry for my english, but is not my native language).
DeleteI've just come in the door from the school run. I'm off to cleanse now! Love it!
ReplyDeletepascalemakeup.squarespace.com
OMG I just searched the internet for this question but I didn't find a good answer - and now I find this in my inbox. Such a coincidence :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, next thing to try - I'm defs guilty of this... Thank you Mrs H!
ReplyDeleteI tend to get food on my chin/around my mouth while eating (messy, I know!), so I always figured washing my face before bed was good to "get the whole day off." Even if I cleanse after dinner though, it's still an extra 3-4 hours of pampering for my skin! Nice post :)
ReplyDeleteCleanse after dinner! :)
DeleteCan you do a post on more 2nd phase cleansers that you recommend???
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I can only surmise from this advice that you are a much less messy eater (and cooker) than I am ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL - feel free to cleanse after eating! :)
DeleteNot sure this is something to admit on the interwebz...but my cats help me remember to cleanse early. They are little kittens at the mo, so use the litter box...so it's a) walk into my house, b) clean the shit out of the box, c) clean the shit off my face... (it's not the same shit, btw...if it is, things have gone horribly wrong).
ReplyDeleteWhatever works honey - whatever works!
DeleteI always cleanse my face right after heading back home because l feel that my skin is dirty. Can I use liquid gold when I have dry sensitive skin with begining of rosacea? Thank u for your help
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't personally. No need. That's not what its for.
DeleteWhat's/who's LG for then, I can't find a review, since using a mask two weeks ago my skin as gone horrible and I want to eliminate what ever else can be causing the irritation and breakout that I never have had before...I use lg once a week with dry sensitive skin?
DeleteCaroline what is LG for or who? I also have dry sensitive skin and have been using this once a week. It doesn't appear to do anything for me I just hope it's helping lol, I can't seem to find a review on it from you?

ReplyDeleteSo, I normally use a baby wipe (don't shout at me lol) to take my make-up off immediately I get home, then clense before bed. But you make some excellent points, especially as I tend to go to bed quite late!!!
ReplyDeleteAlexandra I'm going to ignore this. I know you KNOW you wouldn't use a BABY WIPE, then leave your skin with NOTHING.... *lies down*
DeleteIf I'm not going out again after I get in from work then my makeup comes straight off (using Emma Hardie MCB!). If I need to cleanse again before bed (for example if I got in early and went to bed late) then I might sweep over with a micellar water just to remove any grime x
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant! This really is common sense... the times I get in then sit here in front of the computer blogging and I know my makeup feels gross on my face and my nose feels a little oily but still I will sit here with it on! This is the boot up the ass I needed! TA muchly :) Clare Elise
ReplyDeleteGET IT OFF!
DeleteNo.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got home, it's still light outside. Reapplying sunscreen would mean one more cleanse. Sundamage > Little Irritation from Makeup.
If you're staying in, take it off. If you're going out again - keep it on obvs :)
DeleteIf I am staying home the entire day - do I still to apply sunscreen?
DeleteThanks! It's little tips like this that are so useful, they apply to everyone no matter what kind of products you're using!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, since reading your blog, my skincare routined has changed SO much and my skin has never been better! You are truly the queen of skincare Mrs. Hirons! Lots of Love, A. X.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice - thanks. My skin looks so much better since I found your blog, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI normally have make up remover in my bag so I can get it off on my way home and wash as soon as I get in; can't stand the feeling of make up et al on my face for too long, bleurgh!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your advice Caroline! Seriously LOVE your blog, it's saved my skin from my previously horrible habits!! I do have one question though, I am 19 and a pre-med student currently in the middle of midterms week (my skin literally breaks out every time one of my professors says "exam") so my skin is super angry with me right now. I don't smoke, I'm vegan so I don't eat anything too horrible, and I have sensitive, acne-prone combination skin (what a joy to take care of..). I was wondering if you have any special tips to better care for really stressed out skin, and maybe a soothing/calming mask that's good for my skin when I have an active breakout? Thank you!!!
ReplyDelete-Kelsey
I' am happy that I discover you, you're great! I totally agree! I always take off my make up when I get home:)
ReplyDeleteI love wearing makeup, but I CANNOT WAIT to cleanse it all off as soon as I get home from work. I walk in the door, kick my shoes off, change out of my work clothes and walk straight to the bathroom to start my night routine (even if I get home at 3:00pm). Usually by the end of the day, makeup looks and feels rather gross, and that's how I've always done it.
ReplyDeleteI've been starting to do this in the last few weeks and, though my skin hasn't been great for a variety of reasons, it is actually a lot more relaxing!

ReplyDeleteTotally agree this is what I always have done.
DeleteYep, same here! Love a bit of make-up, but as soon as I'm home I rub it all off :D!
Deletexx
You are a genius. A little tweak like that is huge. I did as I'm told and I love feeling so clean! :) thanks Caroline
ReplyDeleteAdded bonus I find is it perks me up a bit - maybe because I love the smell of Emma Hardie cleanser. One question, if using liquid gold do you use this straight after cleansing or closer to bed time?
ReplyDeleteI should do this more - fed up of feeling like most of my skin care goes on my pillow!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree on the new partner thing if you don't feel comfortable hahaha!!

Let's say I get home at 4pm and wash my face, I'm always worried that by the time 1030 comes around i have built up sweat and grime and I dont wanna sleep on that... so I'd want to wash my face again, but I know over washing is bad, so now I'm not sure what to do

DeleteI have this same question. I have acne prone and oily skin, but heard that over washing can make the skin produce MORE oil, and therefore more acne. Is that true?
DeleteThat's what I've been wondering too. I think I've been doing it too often (morning, when I come home in the afternoon, then again before bed).
Delete(grins smugly) Yay, I do this already! I hate the feeling of sunk-in makeup - perhaps tmi, but like wearing a bra at home. I get home, and it all comes off! Make up.. And bras! Hee hee xx
ReplyDeleteWhat if you come home quite early and I'm concerned about sun damage through my windows?
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I come in the door I take off my makeup ASAP I hate the feeling of makeup on my face yucks!!
ReplyDeleteWhat if you come home quite early and I'm concerned about sun damage through my windows?
ReplyDeleteOh Caroline, I didn't even realise that I'd been doing this all along! Thank you for opening my eyes, you're a lifesaver!
ReplyDeleteohmygilded.blogspot.com
I always do this! My poor husband probably hates coming home to see me with all of my lotions and potions, but it's all in the name of great skin. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Grass Skirt
Love it! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch good advice, as always, Caroline! I mentioned you (and linked to you) in my latest blog post on evening cleansing... :)
ReplyDeletehttp://lifelaurenlavender.blogspot.com/2013/10/cleansing-101.html
I usually cleanse an hour or less before bed because I start getting oily. Should I cleanse, apply moisturisers etc, when I get in, and then do it all again before going to bed? Or can I just do it the once?
ReplyDeleteAlso, if I'm not going out all day, I'll obviously cleanse in the morning, but should I do a second cleanse? And when? At the moment I do it an hour or less before bed but if I should do it earlier, when? Sorry for all the questions, but you are amazing and give such useful advice!
Errm...does this mean I can't go to the gym in my 'office face' and just take the goop off at night? *runs and hides*
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that on days when I get home early(I'm a student) I remove my make up and cleanse immediately and then work out as I don't want to be sweating through my foundation. Then I cleanse again after workout because my skin obviously gets sweaty (and I have very oily skin). And lastly I cleanse again in the evening before bed. I apply moisturiser after each time I cleanse. So that's four cleanses a day, including morning. How could I do this differently?
ReplyDeleteHahhahahah!! I knew you gave good skin care advice, and now fab relationship advice! I usually take my makeup of when i get home, but I didn't think to proceed with my evening skincare. I will defs be giving this a go too! x
ReplyDeletehttp://suzysbeautydairy.blogspot.com.au/
Caroline I have often wondered about this?! I thought the makeup must come off so I do an initial cleanse when I get home around 3pm, just cleanse no products/moisturizer to follow, then the second full cleanse w products to follow before bed...is this bad for my skin?? The inbetween time??? You are the best, never forget!!
ReplyDeleteCaroline, quick question. Im using clinique take off the day balm at night and morning. My skin is combo/oily. Its more oily using the balm in the morning. Can you tell me a good a.m. cleanser? Also P50V a.m. and p.m. or just p.m. Agreed.....you are truly fabulous.
ReplyDeleteCaroline, quick question. I have combo/oily skin. Using clinique take off the day balm a.m. and p.m. It seems to be making my face more oily since using it in the a.m. Can you tell me of a good a.m. cleanser? Also, P50V a.m. and p.m.? Or just p.m.? You truly are amazing.
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline. First time commenting here all the way from Malaysia :-) I love your blog and have learned so much from it especially your wonderful cheat sheets and tips. I get home from work by 7 pm, go to my parents place for dinner around 7.30 pm, return home by 9.15 pm and proceed to remove my make up before I take my bath around 9.30 pm. I cannot remove my make up any earlier because I still need to take my bath and do not want to leave my skin bear. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteVictoria
What totally brilliant advice - I can't believe no-one's told us this before...I totally agree with Secret Squirrel, it's exactly like taking your bra off as soon as you walk in the door! and as for "other halfs" who've never seen you without make up, that's just pathetic (and SOOOO vain!)...why would you be with someone who wouldn't love you despite your puffy, crinkly morning face? Isn't that the whole point of having an "Other half"?? My hubby genuinely thinks I'm at my most beautiful when I've got nothing on my face at all, but then, bless him, he did once tell me that wearing make up was like "Living a lie"!!! I love him, but he has no idea about women and make up!!
ReplyDeleteProbably a silly question, but if part way through the day you wash off your makeup and start from scratch (say it has come off in the rain or you're going out that evening) would you do your whole morning routine again and tone, moisturise etc?
ReplyDeleteGreat question, I often think this is I go out in the evening and am cleansing and putting more make up on
DeleteI do this sometimes... But needless to say I will add this tip to my ever increasing Caroline Bible. Totally agree about the partner thing. Thanks for the chuckle...
ReplyDeleteStupid Q - Does it make a difference if I shower in the evening after said routine (without wetting my face, of course).
And another Q - last week I FINALLY managed to get my hands of P50 (I live in The Netherlands, and only managed to get it in this super exclusive SPA... I had already been using the Clarins for a bit). They told me to begin with the P50W (Luckily they have the tiny bottles that retail for 17.50€), to wet the cotton pad with water, add no more than a few drops of the lotion and pat my skin. All this in order to avoid "purging" and to slowly "build up" to the normal P50. Does this make sense? I don't really feel a difference in my skin... Or should I just give it some more time?
What if your face gets oily again by the time you go to bed??
ReplyDeleteI cleanse as early as possible, but have combination skin with a very oily T-zone, so that area will just be an oil slick by the time I go to bed. Advice?...
Great advice. Im going to strictly follow it from today.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I dont understand why girls should wear so much makeup that their partners dont recognize tgem without it!
I did this last night but by the time I got to bedtime my face was über greasy - really felt like I needed to wash it again. In this scenario what should I do?
ReplyDeleteWORD! Well, actually, I think I'm overdoing this whole cleanse thing. Obviously, I clean my face first thing in the morning. Then I clean everything off when I come from work, and then I repeat the whole thing right before I hit the bed. Is that too much? I just can't help it, I feel like my skin needs to be refreshed all the freaking time. Meh.
ReplyDeletexx
http://gita-oddsandends.blogspot.com/
Never really thought about it like that before, seems so simple though hey haha....
ReplyDeleteDid it today and now I dont have to worry about the 'oh ffs I have to clean my face' thought just before bed. This is my type of facial cleaning routine haha.
I've always started my bath/skin routine early evening; Just makes more sense to me.
ReplyDeleteP.S.: How do I know how much/what kind of moisturizer to use? I'm a teenager with somewhat oily skin and I always feel comfortable after cleansing and acne treatment. I'm just not sure if using a moisturizer is a superfluous step for me or if I could still benefit from it? Thanks!
Thank you so much for this advice, I'm starting right away! I'm a stay at home mom so I don't really have a "get home" time, so I'll just figure on doing this around 5 or 6 :)
ReplyDeleteAlso wanted to ask, I have very acne prone skin and oily skin, and I always want to wash my face as soon as I see any shine on my face. But I've heard that washing your face too often will cause the skin to just produce MORE oil, and therefore clog the pores more. Is this true? Or another myth
I always used to leave cleansing until bed time, but in recent months I've started taking my make-up off as soon as I get home from work - just because getting changed into comfy clothes and taking my make-up off makes me feel like I've changed out of 'work mode'. So I'm very pleased to find that I'm Doing It Right, albeit largely accidentally.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to show this blog to my mum, who has super-sensitive skin and who always sits there moaning that her eyes are starting to itch and her face feels uncomfortable ... while she watches TV at 11pm in a full face of make-up that she's been wearing for 15 hours along with an accumulation of dust/dirt from hours of housework and gardening. It drives me mad. It's not like she doesn't cleanse properly, but she always seems to wait until her face feels like utter crap before she does it.
Love your blog but have never commented before. I wash my face in the morning (I've just started using the Avene Cleanance range) and when I get home at about 3pm I wash my face again after having make up on. Then when I go to bed at about 11/12pm, I wash my face again. Is 3 times too much?? Or should I count the afternoon wash where I have removed make up and cleansed/toned/moisturised/etc as my "night time wash"?
ReplyDeleteHello Caroline!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about Benzoylperoxide gels for acne? Does it really help for long term?? It works at the moment...
Greetings from Frankfurt!!!
"And possibly a new partner" Ah ah !!! génial !! ;-)
ReplyDeleteIs there a Hirons Beauty Bible somewhere ? Everytime you say something I'm like "AMEN Lady!"
ReplyDeleteYou made my day!
DeleteHi Caroline :)), you've answered about cleansing after cooking, walking dogs etc, but in case of exercising? I don't want to sweat with make up on my face, but it does not make sense to exercise with night treatments on your face either? Can I take the make up off with a cleansing milk/wipes/one step cleanser and follow the rest of the regime once the exercise done? Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteLiza, I want to know the same thing!! Does anyone know what Caroline recommends about exercise - whether a face cleanse beforehand is best?
DeleteThis is a great idea! I always remove my makeup before bed, but after work is so much better. Thanks for planting this idea. I'll try to implement it soon!
ReplyDeleteLove your tips!
ReplyDeleteps - Can't help but toss in a request for a future post aimed towards rosacea sufferers. I'd love to hear your perspective. Cheers!
I am now going to start doing this and also the facial massage! Are you still taking appointments for 2013? And do you facials too or just consultations?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Sharon
Hi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteDo you have an opinion on the new foreo luna vibrating cleansing gadgets? Was hoping you might review it soon? I'm interested in knowing whether there's any basis behind the science/worth the cost? Love your blog.
Thanks
OMG I came back to this post just to say that this tip really makes a difference. I have done this for two days now and the next morning my skin does look better than ever before! I love you Caroline :) x
ReplyDeleteUh oh - just read through all 122+ of these comments and not one has the same feeling of dread as i do, associated with not having make up on! I dont think i'm pathetic or vain, but i do prefer how i look with make up on... and i'm not talking full face of slap, i'm talking tinted moisturiser, concealor, mascarra and a bit of blush. I always look so tired (puffy dark eyes) that i am disheartened by my own face sans a bit of coverup. I would hate to have my hubby come home to that every day. I want to look nice for him. I would like the feeling of cleansing as soon as i get home, but would find it hard to fight the urge to cover back up with some tinted moisturiser and a lick of mascarra at least!! Oh dear... :-( I would say though, that your suggestion of the face cloth to wash off cleanser is amazing! I love that feeling of really squeaky clean skin - before bed and in the morning xxx
ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous,
DeleteYour husband MARRIED you. Not for your perfect face, not for your makeup, but for you. I guarantee you he would LOVE to see you for a few hours a day, without makeup. Most men love seeing their partner in their most intimate, natural form—makeup confuses them! A face without it? That's exciting EVEN if it isn't perfect (and no one's is). If you're still nervous and don't believe me, ask him. Seriously. Just ask if he'd like to see you without it for a few hours. Chances are, he will probably say it doesn't matter to him. But seeing you without makeup, will show him that you have a confidence in yourself, that you're comfortable in your own skin (even if it takes some courage) while you're around him. And he'll love that. At least, he sure as hell should. I hope he does. Good luck <3
I feel the same! Also, I wear lenses and when I take my make up off, I have to take my lenses out. And when I do that, I want to fall asleep & I don't want to fall asleep as soon as I get home! As a compromise I have taken off my makeup after dinner these past few days and I think I like it. No bad reactions from my boyfriend, so I guess he can stay ;-)
DeleteHi Anonymous - i know you're right, and actually i have heard the words come straight from his mouth that he prefers the no make up look, but i just feel yukky without it! I dont sleep that well and so the eye and face puffiness just looks that wee bit better with a bit of slap to distract. I do also feel and know that it is really mind over matter which i know i have to work on. it's just so scary!
DeleteIsle - i also have lenses too and need to remove with the make up, and my contacts also seem to be the main thing keeping my eyes open and awake! (probably a whole other issue!)
Hi Caroline, I have been reading up on your take on skin care and I'm interested in getting Hydraluron but I do have very sensitive skin, - Eczema. On normal days, I'd say that I have a combination skin. Do you think that Hydraluron is still suitable for my skin type? Thanks! :)
ReplyDeletetotally agree with you Caroline!...My routine when I walk in through the door...take off shoes, take off headscarf (Hijab- Muslim here peeps)...dump clothes into laundry basket, remove all traces of SPF makeup with my trusted Emma Hardie and into the shower (need to get the smell of teenage boys off me- school teacher)...moisturise....if i don't get this routine done- I cannot relax the rest off my evening...I love your blog and cannot wait to hear when you are available for a face face skin consultation...my skin is need of your help xxx
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't really state that you wear the hijab - Caroline makes fun of it in her cleansing post (look on the right of her homepage) It's a shame religion has to be brought into such things as skincare. I tend to dislike racists and bigots - no matter how uppity they think they are. Funny how dermatologist suggest we cover up more to prevent age spots and skin cancer, etc. We are all entitled to our beliefs but I certainly do not care for people who mock other people's beliefs. It's a shame as I was enjoying reading her blog and then realised I'm helping make a racist popular.
DeleteAnon.
DeleteI have never 'made fun' of anyone wearing any religious clothing.
And seriously, I'm the last person you should be calling a racist and a bigot.
And if you 'used to enjoy' reading my blog why are you commenting on a two year old post underneath a comment left two years ago with your own inflammatory bullshit. How dare you.
I am relentlessly fighting for everyone's right to believe what they want. As long as it doesn't make you an arsehole, believe whatever you want.
Just don't call me racist. Because it's not true.
Such a great post! I agree and it's the first thing I do when I get home. Get everything off and cleanse properly and gently.
ReplyDeleteQUICK QUESTION: I prefer to shower right before I go to bed so I usually wash my face and remove my makeup then.
ReplyDeleteIf I come home at 4, remove my makeup and put on my night cream (algenist overnight restorative). What should I do when I shower? Should I wash my face again and reapply the product afterwards? What if I want to apply liquid gold, do I also apply that early? I also wear sunscreen everyday so should I double cleanse at 4pm to?
Hope you can answer and clear up my confusion! Thank you for all your help :)
I love make up, don't get me wrong. LOVE it. Hard.
ReplyDeleteBut...
As soon as I get home, I have to scrape that shit off my face and serum myself to within an inch of my life.
like many women i too love make-up, but its so bad for your skin!!! at the same time i couldn't imagine going out without my mask! however my day make-up now consists of just blusher and mascara my face feels so much cleaner and no more pimples!! having said that i do wait til bed time to take it off so I'm going to give this a try too, clean clear skin is the best accessory.
ReplyDeleteI go workout (intense sweating) in the evening. So should I do a complete 2-part cleanse before and after working out? Or do i just do a first cleanse before working out and then when I get back a first and second cleanse?
ReplyDeleteI hope you can reply! Thanks!

Hi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your blog, it made a huge difference for me. (I had pretty severe acne, but now, thanks to you, I am off all the medications, and have clear skin, first time in YEARS!)
I have a question related to your post:
I usually workout before lunch, and presume that one should wash the face after the workout, but then I would wash it 3 times a day. Is that normal? Or should I try and cut down on my morning wash?
Thank you,
Dasha
I've been doing this since I saw your tweet and my skin has already improved massively! Thank you sooo much! What do you recommend for no-makeup at home days?

Hi Caroline I am getting married in a few months on a greek island so hot and humid. I have combo skin, aged 30 and if I look after like you tell me to looks okay most of the time but has a tendency to be a bit difficult in hot climates with breakouts etc. Is this okay as a day skincare routine I am there 10 days before I get married and want to have nice skin on wedding day:
ReplyDeleteMorning: Cleanse, hydrating spray, serum(hydraluron) mousturiser, facial suncream (spf 50)
Pre Dinner: Cleanse (in shower to remove sweat, sea salt, spf 50 etc) hydrating spray, serum, moisturiser, make up
Bed time: Cleanse (double), hydrating spray, serum, night cream, Clarins facial tanner, sleep
Please help as I fear my luggage allowance wont allow for the above but don't know what to take. X
