'Adding lemon juice to your cleanser will exfoliate your skin!'
Eat it. Don't add it to any product. Case in point: anyone remember Sun-In from the 80's? Lots of brunette girls going around with orange hair. Nice.
Go Make yourself a gin & tonic. With a nice bit of lemon.
*Cheers*

I think this is my favourite of all the advise you have ever given Caroline!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it contain naturally occurring AHAs?
ReplyDeleteSure - its acidic. But just adding it to a product is more likely to cause irritation than exfoliation. :)
DeleteGood to know! Thanks for clearing it up! :)
DeleteBalmy Brits - everyone knows you make a G+T with lime ;)
ReplyDeleteI'M SORRY. I prefer a red wine. :)
DeleteBarmy Brits, surely? Not sure Britain can ever be described as 'Balmy'
Delete...but I'm fairly sure we did invent G&T ;-)
Lol! I stand corrected on the Balmy/Barmy thing. In my defense, I'm in Miami, so EVERYTHING is balmy (as well as barmy) here. But I maintain that if we were meant to put lemons in a G&T, we would be referring to you as Lemoneys, not Limeys.
DeleteHahahaha, I have never heard this myth before. Always add a bit of lime to my G&T ;)

I've always thought this…must be very harsh on the skin.

Nice.
ReplyDeletehahhaha. thanks.
Haha I'm so glad my Bohoo shaming tweet prompted this! I can't believe ANYONE would smear lemon on their face.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the same can be said for apple cider vinegar? Not suitable to use as a toner to lower pH of skin after cleansing? Drats!
ReplyDeleteI'd also like to know what Caroline thinks about Apple Cider Vinegar as a toner.
DeleteStep it up, and make a Lemon Drop martini with it.
ReplyDeleteCheers! Tho not for me sadly - am breastfeeding. One day again tho ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm here Caroline, may I be cheeky and ask your advice on my routine? It was pretty sketchy until I stumbled on this amazing blog of yours and got better informed - and a little bit kicked in the bum! Love your sass. Anyway...I have possibly dehydrated, pretty sensitive, combination skin that, on the plus side, is soft and young looking still (36yrs old) But I want to improve it. I'd like to glow despite all night nursing of baby and running around after toddler too.
a.m. Clinique TTDO balm + Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream. p.m TTDO again + Liquid Gold/Hydaraulon/Pai Bioregenerate Rosehip Oil in rotation. Does this sound ok? I haven't even got all products yet - some shipping at the mo. Should I add in an acid tone? Pixi? I don't wear sunscreen or makeup, but shoudl with Liquid Gold, right? Just the day after I use it? Or every day? That puts me off a bit. Anyway, would very much value your opinion.
Many thanks in anticipation of some pointers ;-)
Hahahaha! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh my poor skin. I doused my acne ridden face in lemon juice all through my teens (not to mention Sun-In on my hair)! The horror.
ReplyDeleteIn a stupid attempt to work against my skin tone I tried some fake tan which left me looking rather more grubby than 'golden'. In an even more stupid moment I used sliced lemons to help remove the tan (no idea where I picked up that idea). Oh. My. God. The pain was unbearable and I was literally bright red in under a minute, everywhere the lemon had touched. I don't even like to look at a citrus fruit now.
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline, I'm hoping you will have time to give a quick yay or nay to the Kate Somerville DermaQuench Liquid Lift? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCaroline, Does this include lemon oil/citrus oil.I notice thats in lots of products.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love using the most simple and natural ingredients in my skin care, I have always been terrified about putting lemon on my skin. I used a toner a few times that contained some lemon and my skin got terribly irritated. It was so red it looked like it was on fire and was stinging badly!! Awful. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI add lemon juice to my greens, together with olive oil and salt.
Good to know! I was a huge sun-in fan in my teens and it wrecked my hair :-( xx
ReplyDeleteI can't even..... I blame Pinterest for the spread of these myths!
ReplyDeleteOff to make Gin & Tonic.*wink*
ReplyDeletethank you for clearing that up!! Rara from RepeatPiece
ReplyDeleteCaroline, can you do a post on face oils please? Which ones to buy/tips on using them? :-)
ReplyDeleteMy hairdresser told me that it makes your hair lighter or something idk if its true or not haha

Ah ha. That explains why my skin reacted so badly after I used a mixture of diluted lemon juice and sugar to exfoliate my skin a few years back. I tried it after watching a youtuber claim that it's amazing for her skin....and omg my skin was burning for a couple of days even though I was gentle. Now I know better. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteLemon was made for gin & tonic
ReplyDeleteAs usual your wisdom can not be faulted ;)
Thank Caroline for all you great advise. Just wondering if you could do a post with recommendations for begining a good skincare routine for you girls. My daughter is on 11yrs but has congested skin around her nose. I have given her a Vichy wash - but it's forming!! After reading your posts I have followed you advise re cleansing with balm and exfolating toner and love the results. What should I be giving to her to use? I'd like to get her using good products. Thanks a mil Karen
ReplyDeleteThanks for clearing that up! Curious: will my vitamin C serum ("C" Scape Serum by DCL) do a good enough job of alkalizing my skin after I cleanse? Or would you still suggest I use my Liquid Gold first? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove this! So irritating on the skin! Have you heard of/tried any of the Aspect skin care range? It's Australian, and I know how you love alpha h and mv :) they have a pigment punch product which I have found effective! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for continuing this series!!! Though lime would be the original ingredient, above lemons can also serve to make margaritas and mojitos...
ReplyDeleteI remember you told that drinking water with lemon juice was bad for the skin and cause acne. is it correct?
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline. Thanks for this post I've always felt like I'm the only one who thinks lemon would be harmful and irritating to the skin with loads of beauty gurus recommending to use it in facial masks an brands using it in thier cosmetics!! Silly people!!
ReplyDeleteNyway (rant over) what are your thoughts on the Foreo Luna Cleansing Device?
Thanks
Sun-in made my hair green!
ReplyDeleteOh Sun-In ....... fond memories... NOT! lol
ReplyDeletecaroline!! would love to know your thoughts on Indeed Labs retinol reface?! xxx
ReplyDeleteI do agree that if you eat healthy, it will be more beneficial as compare to apply any product to skin.
ReplyDeleteThat's well-thought-of to distinguish! We will not miss out on good produces just for the reason that they're pigeon-holed (or not). Vitamin C Serum for men
