WAIT. YOU USE RETINOL DURING THE DAY?
YUP.
STOP IT. YOU USE RETINOL WHEN YOU'VE USED ACIDS????
YUP.
Let's all take a cleansing breath shall we?
There you go. All better?
Let's keep it brief and separate some major JK Rowling fiction from the facts.
FACTS:
- Retinol/Vitamin A is a proven anti-ager. We're all in agreement on this. The EU, the FDA, every brand, every dermatologist, every crazy blogger that uses GIFs of Kristen Wiig to make a point.
- Retinol reverses the signs of ageing and encourages your skin to keep doing that whole cell-turnover thing that we so badly need as we age. It does this really, really, really well. REALLY well.
- Retinols unclog and minimise the appearance of pores, boost collagen production, even out discolouration and smooth and soften the skin.
- Tretinoin/prescription strength retinoids are a different ballgame. You get these from a doctor, not a brand. They will come with very clear, medical instructions.
- Brands would like you to think that over the counter is as strong, but they're not. Hence the 'Whoa there, this is really super strong - you need gloves and a mask to apply and for the love of GOD do not let your face out in sunshine!!!!' OK I'm exaggerating, but you see where I'm going...
FICTION:
- Retinol makes you sensitive to the sun. PLEASE HOLD CALLER. No it doesn't. The ingredient itself can degrade in the sun in certain formulations, but it isn't going to melt your face. Summer is a good time to start using retinols as humidity in the air can actually help your skin and stop it drying out.
- Retinols and acids (AHA's and BHA's) both exfoliate and therefore are too strong for the skin when used together. STOP YOURSELF. They work on different levels of the skin.
Acids take care of the top layers and get rid of all the old dusty skin, a bit like dusting your furniture. They exfoliate.
Retinols work at a deeper layer - never the twain shall meet. The acid holds the door open for the retinols to pass by...Retinols are cell communicators. If you are flaking or peeling when using a vitamin a product - you may want to reconsider - it's possibly too strong for you.
- Retinol must be avoided in pregnancy. NOPE. This stems from the fact that roaccutane - oral Vitamin A used as an acne treatment - absolutely 100% cannot be used when you are pregnant or hoping to conceive. Anyone prescribed roaccutane will know this and will have been given the facts upon receiving their prescription.
There is a HUGE difference in taking a pill and ingesting it and using a cream topically on the skin. NOW - I'm not suggesting that you go crazy and use all the retinols when you are pregnant - what I AM saying is that if you've been using anti-ageing creams containing retinols and just found out you are pregnant - please do not worry. (You would be surprised at the amount of times I have come across this with clients.)
There is not one recorded case of retinol in skin care causing birth defects in a baby. None.
Doctors are just being extra cautious. And brands don't want to get sued. Simples. Follow the manufacturers advice, and be sensible. Don't have a heart attack if you've been using a night cream that has retinyl palmitate in it and you are 16 weeks pregnant. Please.
Embrace the retinols - I can do a cheat sheet if there's a need - but they are your friend.

Cheat sheet pleeeese
ReplyDeleteI am so so SO glad to see this post. THANK YOU CAROLINE! It's so helpful. Always love more info on retinol and how it works, especially in terms of helping acne.
ReplyDeleteThis was really interesting Caroline, thank you. I haven't really been aware of these as such, at my age of 25 would this be the right time to start using retinols or would you wait a little longer?
ReplyDeleteHope you had a lovely weekend!
Amy
Depends on your lifestyle to be honest - if you're a party girl I'd get going - but if you're fairly healthy, don't drink or smoke I wouldn't worry until you're closer to the big 30 :)
DeletePerfect thank you!
Deletewhat are your favourite retinol products? x
ReplyDeletePlease do a cheat sheet on retinols!!!
ReplyDeleteLove love love all the GIFs!! Never thought of using Retinols in the morning.. Try to keep it simple (ish)!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say using them in the morning is BEST - evening gives your skin longer uninterrupted time to do its work - just don't worry if you occasionally use something containing Vitamin a in the morning - and if a brand says 'use morning and/or evening' crack on :)
DeleteThe GIF's are marvelous and a great a fun way to get the message across. I think a Cheat Sheet would be great! I was at Walgreen's here in the US trying to get my hands on the pepta-bright, and I saw that they have a retinol product they are now selling here in the States. I was thinking of giving a try since I'm in my early 30's and before finding your blog was not really doing much in the way of taking care of my skin. All I did was use very drying, harsh products to attack my acne/breakouts and use wipes at night to take off my eye makeup (I know, horrible!) . I love your blog and youtube channel! (I say the longer the youtube videos, the better :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wit with us. I can't tell you enough, how it is greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Clau
I was on Roaccutane several times. It improved my skin, but now it needs some extra help. I bought some Retinol Reface by IndeedLabs, although I understand it may not be as strong, but maybe it's a good help!
ReplyDeleteplease could you recommend a good retinol product for deep hyperpigmentation? :)
ReplyDeleteI second this! Pleaseeeee
DeleteWould love a cheat sheet and some recommended products. thank you so much xx
ReplyDeleteLove this, informative and funny as hell. Thank You
ReplyDeleteGod yes cheat sheet please. I know you go through routines and stuff all the time, but I find it all so confusing and weirdly a bit stressful. When I first discovered your bl
ReplyDeleteI am laughing so hard!!! Thanks for clearing that up, I've been using an acid toner and I wasn't sure I could use a retinol cream on an isolated acne scar... now I know I won't turn into an Incredible Melting Nazi!
ReplyDeleteNo incredible melting Nazis :)
DeleteI completely disagree with your advice on using retinoids and glycolics during the daytime!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Anon, Feel free to elaborate!!!
Deletethank you so much for this advice!! in the cheat sheet could you put what ages are appropriate to start using them....please :P also could you do a post on rosacea if you don't mind, i've a feeling you get 1
ReplyDeleteThank you thank you for this post!! Yes, I for one would love a cheat sheet! I used to use rx Retin A with good luck, but the past year or so it's become much too harsh and drying on my skin. (I think it was .1%). I'm going to add a different Retin A into my routine but am unsure where to start.
ReplyDeleteGreat post as always. It would be absolutely great to have some recommendations too.
ReplyDeleteI 've been researching retinol for weeks now after trying Verso Super Facial Serum and finding it worked wonders after just a week but it's one of the most expensive and was unsure if I needed to go to that expense or whether something like Dr Brant's Glow or Skinceuticals, Ren or This Works retinol products would be just as effective.
So some kind of run down on the ones you would recommend would be fantastic as there are just so many out there at varying degrees of intensity.
It would also be useful to know where to put them in my skincare routine, at the moment I am going clean, tone, tone, Skinceuticals Resvatrol B.E. then Retinol and either oil or moisturiser at night and during the day I miss out the Resvatrol and add SPF after moisturising but have no idea if that's correct???
So i think a cheat sheet would be greatly appreciated especially if you have any specific Retinol favourites.
Hi Jo,
DeleteYou're doing it correctly. :)
Cx
Thanks for the reply, really reassuring to know. X
DeleteWhat strength should you begin with Caroline and what would to the protocol to deal with side effects.
ReplyDeleteSo what do we look for in a product? Any recommendations for over the counter products? USA and UK...
ReplyDeleteThis is great thank you! Being in my early 40's this is what I want to learn about. I would love to know more - are they better in oils, serums or moisturisers? and a list of products that contain a decent amount to show a difference please? When you get a chance. x
ReplyDeleteRefreshingly honest as always, cheat sheet would be great.
ReplyDeleteI think we would all love a cheat sheet on retinols! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteWould absolutely love a cheat sheet for Retinols! And also the order in which to use them ie. if I use P50, Pepta-bright and Hiroluron and also Alpha H Liquid gold on alternative days....where does the Retinol go?!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :)
Yes! This! I use Sunday Riley Good Genes and would love to add a retinol (preferably the Skinceuticals) but feel uncertain as to where in my routine to add it.
DeleteSo if I've been prescribed a retinoid cream for example differen with the ingredient of adapelene in it, could I not apply this in the day? Could you explain more about prescribed creams and retinoids please??x
ReplyDeleteFollow the prescription instructions. :)
DeleteGreat post! I've been using Sunday Riley Bionic and recently found out I'm pregnant. I'd love to continue using it. Do you think the concentration of retinol is too high? There's nothing on the packaging advising pregnant women not to use.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be fine.
DeleteCheat sheet pppllllleeeaaaassssseeeee! :)
ReplyDeleteCheat sheet ppppppllllllleeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeee! :)
ReplyDeleteCheat sheet please!
ReplyDeleteCould you be any more awesome Caroline? The world needs more no bull&%t people like you. I'd love to know the retinol products you have used and enjoyed, I have never tried any it would be interesting to know :)
ReplyDeleteIf it evens out discolouration does that mean it's not safe to use on freckles? I'll take any help I can get with my skin but I'd rather not lose my freckles.
ReplyDeleteIt shouldn't affect freckles. :)
DeleteYes a cheat sheet please!! Great post :)
ReplyDeleteIs 18 too young to start using retinol in my skincare?
ReplyDeleteOh Caroline, just when I thought you'd reached peak fabness. Great post!x
ReplyDeleteOoooh Hocus Pocus - love that film! Personally, I would love to use retinols as have acne and ageing so know they should be perfect for me but I have yet to try one that doesn't make me look like a lizard within a few weeks. I persisted with philosophy help me for almost 6 months and finally gave up after realising that my crow's feet and tram lines were so much worse. . Have also tried retin a 0.25% and a topix import from US. I also can't use glycolic but am ok with the other AHAs - have crazy sensitive skin!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried SkinCeuticals 0.3%?
DeleteAlllllllllll the GIFS, this does make my monday.
ReplyDeleteGreat post (as always), me too for a cheat sheet and some product information please, it is all so confusing to me. I live in the country (love it) so cannot see products IRL very often, on-line shopping is wonderful LOL.
ReplyDeletePlease can you give recommendations for over the counter retinols thanks
ReplyDeleteLove your posts too :) A cheat sheet please and maybe some of your fave retinol products for people like me who have no clue. Ta x
ReplyDeleteOMG the GIFs - I love them! Great post.
ReplyDeletethebeautyinformer.com
Another plea for a cheat sheet please! With GIFS :)
ReplyDeleteTeen acne cheat sheet please!
ReplyDeleteThanks Caroline, some product suggestions would be good, I don't really know where to start with retinols.
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteA cheat sheet would be perfect please :) As a 25 year old soon to turn 26 I think it's time to start introducing some retinols but if I'm honest I don't have a clue where to start and whole heartedly believed some of those myths- oops! Thank goodness we have the Goddess Hirons to save us :) Your a star! x
Yes please do a retinol cheat sheet!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this, Caroline. It's timely for me as I am sick to death of my melasma / patchy-looking face (seems to be the worse it's ever been this year), and am starting to look for products to help. A cheat sheet and product recommendations would be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteDeborah
xxxxxxx
Thanks for this!! But as you say "prescription tretinoins are a different ballgame" does this mean if I am using a precription tretinoin I should not use AHAs/BHAs with it?
ReplyDeleteNo, it means you wouldn't walk around in the bare sunshine with Differin on your skin. If you have a prescription - follow the directions.
DeleteThanks for the reply!! Good to know. I only use my RetinA at night and I am religious about using SPF during the day. Looking at adding a gentle acid into my routine like the FAB pads that you are always recommending.
DeleteOh Caroline this was brilliant! I had a very good laugh at all those memes! You also cleared up alot of misconceptions so thank you!
ReplyDeleteA cheat sheet and some product recommendations would be awesome. This post was so much magic, and I'm ashamed to say I'd been taken in by some of the fictions! oops
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline - I'm a HUGE fan of your blog (I've dedicated posts to you on MY blog LOL!) - you've completely changed the way I thought about acne - and my skin couldn't be happier :-)
ReplyDeleteI am a little bit confused about one part of this post though -
I understand that Retinol and Retin-A are NOT the same thing - but I thought the well-documented skincare benefits you mentioned are related to Retin-A...not all Retinoids or Retinol. So while you don't have to avoid the sun or be as restrictive as you do with Retin-A, you also won't be getting the benefits (collagen production etc) - especially since the amount of retinol in over the counter products that can be converted into retinoic acid is low - so there is no consistency with regards to how much *active* product you will get on your skin.
Hi Ella!
DeleteNice blog - also - you are offensively pretty. :)
you're absolutely right - there is no consistency because brands will use whatever % they want to - or whatever % they can afford/want to spend of active ingredients. It doesn't just apply to retinols as I know you'll know.
You will absolutely gain benefits from over the counter products with vitamin a content - you just won't know how much retinol is in the product unless the brand lists it aka SkinCeuticals Retinols at 0.3/0.5 and 1%.
It's a minefield - but also why people shouldn't have a panic attack when using products containing retinols during the day.
Thanks for commenting :)
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteOops - got an error message when I submitted my response - let me try again :
DeleteTotally makes sense - it's good to know that the magic Vit A skincare benefits can still be achieved via over-the-counter products - without having to be as careful about exposure/side effects as you would with prescription/Retin-A products.
Offensively pretty - no one's ever said that to me before - will have to screen-cap that to look at on my blah-days :-)
Natural retinoids (IE, tretinoin, retinol, retinyl palmitate, etc.) should not be used during the as they are phototoxic - that is, they damage the skin when exposed to sunlight.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3814709/
That paper simply says there is a need for testing - none of the tests were controlled and were done on animals (ew) and in vitro.
DeleteNoooo wayyy!!What? I´m stupid now...But are you saying that we can apply prescription retinol and go out in the sun? Beach??
ReplyDeletePlease a cheat shee , urgent!
Catherine
NO I SAID EXCEPT PRESCRIPTION!!! :)
DeleteYes, but with SPF on top of it, is it fine?
DeleteThanks for answering :)
Catherine
Or avoid burning your bloody face off and wear a hat maybe? I wouldn't eff around with prescription strength products and prolonged sun exposure...
DeleteI would love a cheat sheet please! Also, does the same apply to breastfeeding regarding the use of retinols? Thank you!x
ReplyDeleteI never use Retinols in daytime, actually Retinols degrades in sunlight so that it affects the potency in day time. BTW I like these funny GIFs. :) Thank YOU
ReplyDeleteHi Terry,
DeleteI agree - some formulations will degrade - newer more sophisticated formulas however, have critical wavelength testing and thus used with SPF's should be stable.
Can I just say I love the delivery of this post, made me laugh. also the content was really good, cleared up some questions I had ;) thanks
ReplyDeleteDear Caroline, please prepare something about the neck care. Please!
ReplyDeleteUse everything that you use on your face on your neck. Facial skincare stops at the boobs. x
DeleteAWESOMENESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS xxx
ReplyDeletePlease do a cheat sheet - What products would you recommend? Do you apply it once a day? Twice a day? A couple of times a week?
ReplyDeleteSuch a helpful article, thanks!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could do cheat sheet not only on reltinol but also the rest of athe nti aging fellows meaning vit. C and E, how to combine them into skincare rotuine! Thanks in advance!
Hi Caroline, Would you say black skin has different needs when it comes to Retin A due to hyperpigmentation and melanin etc?
ReplyDeleteI never know if everything applies to my type of skin.
OT for this post, but this is in response to ANONYMOUS who posted in the CLINIC comments, to say that your answers are minimal.
ReplyDeleteYes. Yes, they are. And for good reason.
Not only can you not be expected to write a thesis for each question, we, your readers, cannot READ 160 thesis responses.
Lay people cannot absorb that much info. We need short and to the point.
I'd love a cheat sheet on retinol use, especially regarding layering with other skincare products.
ReplyDeleteI know you're not a dermatologist, but I feel like you could give me better advice on products to use with retinoids, like tretinoin, retin-a, etc. My derm tells me to rub in a pea-sized amount with my moisturizer..... but I've read so much more detail on it than that, and I just feel like you'd have some awesome comments regarding slowly working in the retinoids, and what to use with them, timing, etc.
Caroline help, I use jojoba oil and recently started using Redermic R La Roche posay? Wchich one first? And how much time do I have to wait between application of the first one? Thanks!
ReplyDeletecheat sheet request: cleansers. You review and recommend so many great ones and I lust after all of them! Can you do a cheat sheet where you break down different skin types/concerns/ages with recommendations for the second cleanser?
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteDo acids and retinols/Vit A derivatives thin skin over time? I"ve heard this and never sure if it was a myth or fact.
Thanks!
Love this post! Explains a lot and the pics help too haha

Is it really naughty to buy prescription Tretinoin 0.05% abroad? Even if you've researched it well and are totally sensible about its use.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching a youtube video by itsmyrayeraye where she mentioned using Tretinoin, I went ahead and order 0.5 in gel and cream form and 0.1 gel from alldaychemist. I'm too keen when it comes to getting clear skin so i went ahead and used the 0.1% 3 days in a row. My skin was peeling and felt very raw so I didnt use it for a week and tried again using it every 3 days. Again skin wasn't tolerating it. I left my skin for another week and then started using the 0.5% CREAM every 3 days. Am now using the 0.5 Cream every other day and my skin looks amazing. All the dehydration lines, any bumbs are gone. Most of my scaring is gone. I'll slowly work my way to the 0.1%. I can only imagine how clear my skin will look months from now.
DeleteI bought a few 0.05% tubes abroad about 8 months ago ;) Can only tolerate it every other night. My skin has never looked better. I built up to this very slowly and have had very little peeling. I'm 50 now, and wish I had started years ago.
DeleteBEST. POST. EVER.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Caroline! This is extremely helpful, as I have been wondering about this. But a cheat sheet would be absolutely wonderful. I'm using the LPR at the moment, after which I plan to "graduate" to Skinceuticals.
ReplyDeleteWanted to add something re the sugar discussion the other day, as someone who had to stop eating sugar a few years ago (intestinal plus resulting joint problems). As far as I was informed by the nutritionist - only stevia and 100% fruit based things (like unsweetened apple mousse or date syrup) are OK if you are really going to go cold turkey on everything, like I had to. All the other stuff - malitol, agave, maple, rice syrup, coconut sugar etc - is eventually turned to sugar by the body. Yeah, it's hard, but soooo worth it!!!
Please Please Please
ReplyDeletedo a cheat sheet for chemical exfoliants/ retinols etc
some days i think i'm doing to burn my face off with all of the exfoliants. Clarin's Toner. Liquid Gold. Zelen's BHA wipes. Pepta Bright.
SOS!
Quite clearly not enough gifs! - joking aside, great info esp for me who has just been upgraded to a new age tick box (mid 30s) and has suffered from acne to now pustular rosacea for 23 years - I just love your blog - thank you! <3
ReplyDeleteDear Caroline! I've read a lot about not to use vitamins C and A at the same time. Retinol cream on top of the vitamin C serum, is it OK or you should separate those two?
ReplyDeleteI just came across this too; specifically not to mix A and C because it produces hydrogen peroxide. The topic of mixing active ingredients is really interesting (ahem, frightening considering how much money is invested in some products). After reading a few of your posts (well, a whole lot of them) I have started piling things on my face (with grrrreat results, tyvm!). But, I am curious if all that layering might be backfiring because I'm using things that cancel each other out.
DeleteAs always TYSOOOM for all the information on here!
Great Post, & yes please to cheat sheet :-) x
ReplyDeleteI needed this post. GOD, I needed this post.
ReplyDeleteMs. Caroline? Is this correct, please? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCleanse
Acid Tone (Clarins Brightening Exfoliating Toner)
Hydrating Tone (Serozinc)
Eye Cream
RETINOL
Hydraluron
Moisturizer
I just asked that cause i'm super confused but am unsure about using a retinol cream before hydraluron :s
DeleteNice post as always...... All agreed ur fab & cheat sheet needed.
ReplyDelete35 yrs not using Retinol but wanting to any high street recommendation? Also was using pai rosehip oil just inflamed skin....
Hi Caroline, I love your reviews and advice!
ReplyDeleteI have my own skin care blog as i have suffered with Cystic Acne for years and share what has worked for me on there as i get asked a lot what i have had done. http://unebelleskin.tumblr.com/
I loved this post and wanted your advice if you have the time.
Jan this year i took Roaccutane for 5 months, it has completely cleared my skin and couldnt be happier, but i have the odd scar's and wrinkles from my skin drying out so much, a friend has been using Retino-A (tretinon) to perfect his skin, do you think it will be too harsh to use on my skin yet? i know you cant get it in he UK, but can get it from India online. Im worried it will burn my skin as it is still quite sensitive to even a face mask, do you have any substitutes to recommend?
Love to hear from you.
Emily x
Yes please, cheat sheet! It would be amAZiNg if you could also touch on products to avoid when using tretinoin. Thank you! xoxo
ReplyDeleteCaroline WHICH COMES FIRST!?!?! HELP
ReplyDeleteRetinol cream (In my case its StriVectin-AR™ Advanced Retinol Night Treatment)
or
Hironluron aka Hydraluron
and then moisturiser, or does the Hydraluron go on before?
HELLLLPPPP MEEEEE
ps. love you.
Caroline, you are a gift to the world! I'm just learning the importance of nourishing my skin, and I'm 34! Thank you so much for taking time to blog and make videos. I just purchased Sunday Riley Juno, Ceramic Slip and Good Genes. I also got the Shiseido Ultimune Concentrate.
ReplyDeleteI've learned that our routines should roughly be: cleanse, acid tone, hydrate tone, serums, oils, moisturizer. If we are taking topical prescriptions for acne (Clindamycin) and using Retin-A in the evenings, where would those fit in the routine? Before serums?
Thank you so much for the cheat sheets, and just the wealth of information you give to us!
I've been using over the counter Retinol for awhile and my skin is horribly dry now. Like cracked desert dry. Help! http://makesitup.blogspot.com/2015/04/my-skin-does-not-like-retinol-thoughts.html
ReplyDeletecheat sheet please!
ReplyDeleteI'm I the only one who can't use retinol? My skin just hates it. It becomes very sensitive, peels, wrinkles become more visible, breakouts start to happen and new wrinkes appear ah and also dry patches and I have combination skin. How do I get the same benefits elsewhere?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline! I'm not sure you'll see this as it's an older post, but wanted to ask it somewhere somewhat pertaining to my question. I recently added Sunday Riley good genes and Luna into my prior routine of cleanser, pixi tonic (using Bliss peel pads instead every couple nights), Bobbi brown face oil, and moisturizer. Since introducing Sunday Riley I stopped using my bliss glycolic pads but wondered if maybe I can still use them with Luna, possibly before applying it in place of pixi? Also I want to note I mostly use good genes during the day so I'm not sure if using the pads post-good genes would be too much?
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to check am i correct:
Cleanse
Acid Tone
Hydrating Tone
Redermic R (3 times per week)
Effaclar duo
Moisturizer
Eye Cream
Is it correct order:
ReplyDeleteCleanse
Acid Tone
Hydrating Tone
Repiderm R (2-3 times per week)
Effaclar duo
Moisturizer
Eye Cream
Caroline,
ReplyDeleteWould you use a acid tone or layer a serum (EGF, copper peptides) etc with retin A or just wash and let it do its job?
I love your site and it's been life changing for me in a few weeks because I thought my skin couldn't get better (it was always good, now it's better). I do need to spend more time doing real work but reading your blog is a treat!
Rita
Hi Caroline
ReplyDeleteThis isn't about retin a but just wondered about using liquid gold as have been given duac cream by Dr which is benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin for hormonal acne. I'm meant to use at night. Can I use in conjunction with liquid gold as they are meant to be night treatments
Thanks x
Hi Caroline
ReplyDeleteI'm 32 living in Australia. I have fine lines, oily t-zone & prone to blemishes. Not sure if I'm overkilling with products or have this in the correct order:
Cleanse - Cetaphil
Tone-LRP Serozinc
Retinol Reface
N&F-Glycolic Fix Overnight purifying Gel
EL-Adv Night Rep
Rosehip oil as moisturiser (Too much Vit A??)
Can I use a moisturiser on top of all this?
Thanks so much :)
Sharon
Hi. Can I use the Dennis gross alpha beta peel in the am and their retinol serum at night? Also is it a good idea to layer a peptide on top of a retinol at night?
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline, I am using differin at the moment, and I read in a couple of places that using glycolic acid with retinol neutralizes the retinol so it becomes less effective. I have stopped using pixi as a result, but I am doubtful myself, and then I saw this. Can you advise please? Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteZ.
Hello, I found in myt inbox this set of 'rules' which I would dearly love you to comment
ReplyDeletehttp://sheerluxe.com/2016/10/05/rules-layering-skincare-0?utm_source=Adestra&utm_medium=email&utm_content=READ&utm_campaign=LONDON%20ROAD%20%286th%20October%202016%29&utm_term=Daily
they include the Retinol + acids querelle. Actually, my dermatologist has me currently on a regime which starts with a glycolic (15%) cleanser and then a cream containing retinol and a bunch of other acids to treat my melasma - OF COURSE that's to be followed with SPF50 in the day, but that would have to be done anyway when dealing with pigmentation....
