2015 was going to be my year. I started off with a bang, blogging every day, on top of things, all was well. Business was great, family was healthy and intact and things were looking good. Yeah, well, life is what happens when you're busy making other plans eh?
The year settled in and began to show its real colours. Since then I’ve been hospitalised, suffered that allergy in L.A., been (the victim) in a car crash, been hospitalised again and burned myself.
July and December are traditionally my favourite months of the year - July is when I turn the notch down a little on work, the kids break up and so the school runs stop, it's my birthday and the sun comes out. Well, as much as the sun ever comes out in England.
I write this on August 1st. July is over. Hallelujah. July sucked. I would think of a more eloquent way to put it but sometimes you just need to call a spade a spade. It sucked.
I’m glad to see the back of it.
I’ve never been a ‘woe is me’ personality and don't worry, I do not intend to start now. I started drafting my ‘July Favourites’ for a YouTube video and thought to myself ‘actually the best thing about July is that it is over’. My favourites are pretty much all non-beauty. I have literally not worn makeup for a month. I’ve been in bed (enforced by the docs) for over two weeks of the month so there are a lot of books on my list.
We had a week-long break booked in Cornwall for the last week of July and were able to keep the holiday. That has helped me get my head back, as it were. Eight of us travelled down on my birthday. There was literally no signal there, so we were all looking at and engaging with each other instead of our phones. Seeing the kids hang out together and reconnect as friends and siblings was blissful, if not extremely noisy and messy.
Our youngest child finished primary school last month. We are starting a new phase as parents - one that does not include a school run for the first time in 20 years. That I will not miss!
Business is still great and ultimately, although the shock of the crash and the aftermath is still giving me horrific flashbacks, we all walked away from the car after we were hit..
After the impact, then the noise (you feel it first) and then flying glass when the coach hit us, I braced myself to look into the back seat not knowing what to expect. Then I heard screams, saw that the children were dazed, bloodied, but awake, and my first thoughts were literally: ‘The kids are ok. Put your hazards on, get off the motorway, call the police and the ambulance. You can do this. The kids are ok. The kids are ok.' And we are. And we will be.
So, as I face August determined to make it as spectacularly fabulous as I can, I just want to thank you again for all of your get well and birthday messages, cards and flowers.
I'm home, rested, absolutely back to work and the blog and filming and and and and - mainly loving life.
SPF is coming this week, as is the insider low-down on the new Pixi skincare, and retinols will follow.
Screw you 2015. I'm pressing restart. :)
Yep. I'm with you. July sucked big time. So glad you are back and ready to whip the rest of the year's ass. Now I just have to find my inspiration...

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. Wish you all the best.
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog and watching your videos for a while, I enjoy very much both of them !
But it's my first comment : I was very touched by all you described of this very difficult month, and I wanted to send you my small part of support from Paris (I'm french) and tell you how much I appreciate your work - and your personnality (god, your personnality rocks !) !
I wish you a beautiful August !!
Glad to hear you're on the mend Caroline. Onwards and upwards!
ReplyDeleteAlso looking forward to your retinol and SPF posts. (2 things I have now become obsessed with!) - maybe a Top 10? Like you did with acid toners and spritz toners.
August will be fab :) x x
looking forward to seeing your favorites of the month and your next posts. I'm so glad you and your family are now feeling better. Life is hard sometimes and the only relief when it's hard is that the bad feelings/moments are over. I send you a smile and a lovely ray of light from the sunny Italy. You're fabulous. Take care!
ReplyDeleteGO Caroline!! glad you are all on the mend. new beginnings :) xo
ReplyDeleteJeez - that gave me goosebumps reading about the crash and as you say, checking, checking & triple checking the kids are ok. So glad you guys all came out ok. Here's to a 2015 re-start x
ReplyDeleteWhat a tough few months x
ReplyDeleteSending lots of love and well wishes !
Good to hear that you are recovering and that the kids are fine. Onwards and upwards as they say, never look back! The rest of the year is going to be amazing!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad everything/body is ok and look forward to your YT vids! X
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to hear you and your family are all ok now, it sounds like you needed that well deserved holiday with your family after all that has happened to you recently.
ReplyDeleteI hope the rest of the year only gets better for you.
Look forward to reading your posts again, they are always so informative. And your sense of humour really shines through when you give your opinion on life.
Take care and all the best.
Kelly.
we missed you. keep well.
ReplyDeleteGosh Caroline, I saw the photo of your car on twitter and thought it looked bad but had no idea it was so very serious. Life and what it presents us with is so hard to fathom.
ReplyDeleteLet's raise a glass to the next few months. Onwards and upwards.
Dear Caroline, you attitude towards life is truly inspirational. I am glad you have had the time to recuperate and enjoy a holiday before getting back to work. We've all missed reading your posts here. Looking forward to your posts/videos in the future. In the future, if time permits, could you please do a post on serums? I know there's one on the blog but I was hoping for a more detailed one based on skin type and results that each provides. It just gets very confusing sometimes. A post on perhaps just your favorite ones?
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are feeling better! I'm sure the rest of the year will be completely fabulous! *Hugs*
ReplyDeleteYou're such a beautiful person, Mrs. Hirons! It is beyond amazing how an individual so far away geographically can have such a powerful presence in the lives of so many people. You were in that crash and so many, far & wide, felt the impact.
ReplyDeleteYou're not only phenomenal, you are A PHENOMENON!
More power to you! Best wishes for the Hirons from India :) xx
So glad you are back and in such a good place. Nxx
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Caroline & so glad your kids & yourself are well after the crash..
ReplyDeleteI go back to work on Tuesday with the same thought - 2015 Part II .. Let's all do this ! x
The Hirons clan has been in my thoughts, I know you've had a monster rollercoaster year. Who says you cannot just push restart whenever you want!? It's your life!

Hope you have a much better month this month!! I'm a fairly new reader and I've gotta say, I'm loving your blog :) it's really helped me understand skincare, it seemed so daunting before but the way you explain it makes it so simple to me, so thank you from me and my skin!!
ReplyDeleteThank God you're back! We missed you! I don't know if in the UK insurance covers therapy. But I highly recommend talking to a professional if the experience really shocked you.
ReplyDeleteSo, why no more school runs after primary school? I'm in the US, so I'm not very up to speed on the UK education system, and I'm just curious. Is there busing for secondary school, but not for primary? (I apologize if this is a really dumb question and everyone gets a headache from rolling their eyes at me.)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds to me like you've gotten all the crap out of the way and deserve a smooth sail through the rest of the year. (Touch wood.)
Sorry to hear you haven't been having the best time, I can agree with you about July however... it's been dreadful! apart from my anniversary of course x
ReplyDeletewww.sheintheknow.co.uk
Godspeed your recovery and may you and your family find companionship, love and a king healthy life with each other. You handle life with such grace.
ReplyDeleteShocked to hear the détails of the crash, so glad you and your family are okay. Sending all my love your way!
ReplyDeleteYou go Caroline! I'm glad you're back and sounds so positive. Wishing the very best of good thoughts to you and your family xx
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Caroline, hope August is kinder to you!
ReplyDeleteReading your description of the accident just here literally made my eyes tear up. It sounds so scary. I'm so pleased you all came away from it somewhat in tact. x
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! I'm so glad that you and your family are well. Your description of the accident is absolutely terrifying. I've been following you on Instagram and I really loved your pictures of Cornwall. I don't know why I only ever go to London when I'm in the UK, but you've inspired me to change that!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're finally doing better! Big hugs and can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings.
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear from you, Caroline! I can understand what you feel and went through because I've been in a similar accident with my then 1-year old son sitting in his carseat behind me. Hope you recover soon and forget this as soon as possible!
ReplyDeletehttp://againstandforward.blogspot.com
Glad you got to go on the holiday with your family. Thats all that counts when its time to batten down the hatches. Take it easy and hope August is much kinder to you and yours x
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Caroline. You have been sorely missed and I'm sorry that the last month or so have been so full on for you. Thank goodness you & the kids are ok and feeling your way back to normality. Cornwall is such a beautiful place and we're off there ourselves in September, cannot wait!! I'd love to know what part you visited and what you thought of it. I'm hoping the second half of our year will be awesome as hubby spent most of the first half in and out of hospital and doctors rooms for apts, tests etc and has now finally got the all clear on his health. Here's to the rest of 2015, may sweet things come to us all.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear things are better, Caroline... And you are absolutely right, the main thing is that your kids are well and that you are focusing on the positive aspect of what happened to you.
ReplyDeleteGod, I know what you mean about those flashbacks! They take quite a while to disappear...
Hugs xx
Welcome back Caroline, I'm glad that you and your family are OK! We've missed you!
