Choice Books - Beauty: A Guide for Health & Beauty Therapists
I am always asked about my beauty therapy training and what advice I can give to people studying/thinking about studying beauty therapy. I will do more posts of this nature and about 'How to get ahead in the Industry' etc but thought I would start with the basics.
The Gaynor Winyard 'A Guide for Health & Beauty Therapists' was my Bible when I was at Steiner. It's quite detailed and although some of the advice/language may be a tad outdated it is a brilliant starting point for therapists. It gives detailed information on anatomy, systems of the body, structure of the cells, tissues of the body, structure and functions of the skin, lymphatics, skin analysis and much, much more.
Its available on Amazon and the IBN codes are as follows for those Overseas:
ISBN-10: 058224790X | ISBN-13: 978-0582247901
Hope it helps!

I'm so pleased to see this post and the book sounds just like what I'm looking for, however it's pricey and only 1 left in stock :( looking forward to future book recommendations x
ReplyDeleteOlivia just a heads up - this is a professional study book used for coursework. Schoolbooks are always going to be pricey! :) x
DeleteYou might want to check your local library. Whenever I want to read a beauty book or some kind of interior design or anything that is going to be a hefty price I always check my local library first, if I'm happy with the book then I'll check Ebay and Amazon for a copy.
DeleteMore libraries now use an online stock checker where you can search for the ISBN and reserve. There had used to be an online site where you could buy text text books from, failing that you could try looking at Freecycle sites for text books :-)

ReplyDeleteHi Caroline, thanks for the recommendation - just what I need. To let others know, I have just purchased one from eBay for £2.99 with free postage. If you enter the title into the search box and scroll down the listings you will see a second edition which is discounted on the rrp of £38.99. Looks the same to me :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, I got mine ordered before Ebay folk catch on and put the prices up ;-) xx
DeleteYes, I wondered if they would suddenly have an influx of orders and then wonder where the interest was coming from. It's their lucky day! X

DeleteI ordered mine from eBay same day. But just got a message now from the seller saying "it's been damaged and they can't fulfil my order". Hmmmm. Funnily enough all the books have shot up in price.
DeleteThanks Caroline I've been waiting for this post :-) xx
ReplyDeleteThis looks so nice xx

Thank you for the recommendation! I am a scientist (microbiologist studying all of those pesky acne-causing bacteria! and immunologist - studying how the body reacts to the bacteria) studying to become a skin care expert and this is right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteYou're fantastic! Happy weekend. xx
I really want to research a lot of the science behind beauty etc so think this might be a good place to start!
ReplyDeleteWill check this out, thanks for the recommendation. Got the Kate Somerville book for my birthday, yay! I bet both are better than my shite Lorraine Norman Habia text book I have for college! x
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline What's your opinion on the book by Paula Begoun "Don't go to the cosmetic counter without me"?
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't give the thumbs up to many products...
I LOVED the A&P part of my Beauty therapy course. Where did you study? I went to The Sheffield School Of Health & Beauty. Pretty Good! x
