Ava has been getting stress eczema around her eye and possible perioral dermatitis around her nose. I was baffled. I had parental AND supposed-skincare-knowing guilt. WHY couldn't I fix my own child's skin?
Well, Miss Hirons informed me last night that she uses a very famous foaming cleanser with a very famous cleansing brush when she's at her friend's houses because: 'it's fun'.
COME ON.
Really????
'But my mates all use it!'
'Their Mums gave it to them!'
It's OK. I went in with this last night, again this morning, then packed her off to school.
Next she'll be telling me that she supports Man United and that she's always thought Duran Duran were crap.

I love these Gifs! In terms of stress eczema around the eyes, what would you recommend to treat?
ReplyDeleteThis post is pure gold. Exactly how I feel about my sisters. "Oh, I'm sure this hypo-allergenic, dermatologist tested toner from Clinique, is going to be great for my skin. Never mind that alcohol is the second ingredient!"
ReplyDeletehahahahha what non foaming cleanser should I use for combination sensitive acne prone skin?
ReplyDeletehahahahahaha I literally am laughing out loud right now. Those GIFS are hilarious. I hope her skin gets better soon xxx
ReplyDeleteI have stress eczema around my eyes as well and I have no idea what to do anymore :( I use gentle cleansers and don't wear much makeup besides foundation and mascara. I have used mild moisturizers and coconut oil on my eyelids, but nothing.
ReplyDeleteWhat helped mine was using the Aveeno Baby Eczema care lotions. It's super thick and uncomfortable to put around the eyes, but it's the only thing that helped the patches go away. Use it just before going to sleep and you won't notice it as much. And only put it directly on the eczema patches, the skin around your eye is far too delicate to have such a heavy cream all over it.
DeleteOh no, poor Ava! Tell her even readers her mum's age know it's not good for them, so on teen skin???? I cringe to even think about it...
ReplyDeleteI wish you were my mum!
ReplyDeleteAny tips on how to get my hubby to stop using Johnsons baby lotion on his face? Thing is his skin is better than mine so I duno whether to leave him to it...plus he smells like a baby which I quite like lol.
My husband NEVER washes his face (I suppose some shampoo gets on it in the shower and he does shave a couple times a week), and he has oily skin, and no wrinkles at 50 years old. So as much as I want to push mattifying products on him, I don't think my sales pitch will work when his skin is better than mine despite my arsenal of products!
DeleteMine only uses the handwash near the sink. I tried to trick him by replacing it with a facial cleanser but it didn't work... but he loves the facials treatment I put on him once a while, not so hopeless?
DeleteMine washes his face with a bar of soap, hand soap, that he also uses for his body, and 'moisturises' his face with his Nivea body lotion...... I relate to the head smacking against the table clip!
DeleteGreat lunchtime reading Caroline. Sure what would you know Mom! A near perfect stranger is a much more credible advisor .
ReplyDeleteGlad to see I'm not alone in this!
I on the other hand am nicely surprised to find that my almost 15 year old has been cleansing and moisturising every morning and night, since I promised her I'd buy her the Good things range of skincare if she showed me that she can keep her regime regular! Result!! I also screamed 'Noooooooo' at my eldest daughter's announcement last night that she was about to Google Bio oil and instead have once again, pointed her in the direction of your blog and some good quality facial oils. Loving the blog activity Caroline, yes I'm obsessed with your advice!
ReplyDeleteHilarious - love these gifs.
ReplyDeleteI've got to ask the same question - i have dermatitis on my eye lids and it is forever dry and flaky and bright red. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Currently waiting for a referral to a dermatologist to come through.
I don't know Caroline's recommendation, but I love Clinque's All About Eyes when my eyes get like this. I apply it to the eye area and the lids, sometimes more than twice a day. After a week or two my eyes feel so much better, not flaky and red, and they don't hurt. I don't always use this cream but at any sign of my skin drying and acting up, it's the only thing I will use.
DeleteI have blepharitis which gave me really really dry eyelids, which flaked and made my eyelids swell. I stumbled on something called simple eye ointment (not from the simple brand) from the pharmacy. It's just a gel that can be used in the eyes or on the lid. Only thing that helped. When my symptoms return from time to time, I just buy more of that and the dryness goes and my eyes don't swell. Can only be bought over the counter. Hope that helps.
DeleteThe Avène hydrating eye treatment is quite good when I get itchy, irritated and flaky eyelids.
DeleteHey Emma hopefully you will see this! I suffer from the same condition and after years of my GP telling me to rub baby oil into my eyelids to clear it (can...we....just...not) I discovered a range by the brand "Blephaclean". They have wipes, lotion and a gel to clear the eyelids and they do not sting or anything horrible like that. I've noticed a massive difference since using the wipes and they may help you too :)
DeleteAfter following this blog, I healed my had-for-over-20-years facial eczema (also affected eyes - red, scaly, weeping, flaking) with a decent and regular cleansing routine (although I avoid exfoliating acids on the inflamed areas); the product that has saved me ten fold is Clinique's moisture surge Mask (note, not the usual tub moisturiser). I don't used specific eye creams during that time, and avoid layering as I develop milia easily. After the skin has healed it was back to the usual full routine. My key was to just stop touching the area!
DeleteI had awful dermatitis on my eyelids and then it migrated below my eyes. After months of cutting out and reintroducing makeup and skincare products, I finally figured out that it was caused by my favorite nail polish. Good luck with yours!
DeleteEmma, I liked Simple eye ointment too, but did you know it contains a huge % of parffin (mineral oil).
DeleteIt did help me though - this was BC (Before Caroline) for me and I'd been getting my spot treatments for the rest of my face too close to the eyes and gave myself red sore flaky eyes. I guess it was a good barrier.
BC lol. it's 5 am sorry.
Hi Emma & Rachael - I suffer from Blepharitis and have been using Blephaclean products for years. They are great but recently I have discovered Sea Buckthorn Oil capsules which contain Omega 7. I have been taking them for two months now and my symptoms have completely disappeared. No itchiness or dry skin on my eyelids at all. Try it ! I am even thinking about buying mascara again which I never thought would happen.
DeleteSo she uses the same brush as another person?
ReplyDeleteI mean, my mom told me when I was 3 not to use anyone else's toothbrush at kindergarten, and I applied with everything having a brush in it (mascaras, skin brushes, normal hair brushes...)
Poor Ava
A Manchester City gal are you?
ReplyDeleteI only know of City vs. United from a semester at Manchester U.
Thanks for this :) What a fun mom you must be. Lucky girl.
ReplyDeleteIt also goes the other way. My Mom can't stand it when I suggest ANYTHING to her. How could I possibly know what would help her? I'm not her age! Don't I know that she's tried EVERYTHING? OK, so I'm not 85 (yet)! I just happen to think that I've found a true skin care expert! So there! Phffttt!!!
ReplyDeletefunny one :)
ReplyDeleteMy skin's savior and a fellow Liverpool fan!
ReplyDeleteYNWA!
Wow peer pressure eh! Wait til it's drinking and smoking!
ReplyDeleteIt is ok, just get rid of her.... I'll be a much better "child" although way not as cute...
ReplyDeleteLol
Haha you make me laugh! x
ReplyDeletealicekatex ♥
for eczema and dry skin I always get my skin under control with Dermatique Recuperating Cream, worth a try, it lasts for ages!!
ReplyDelete*Grabs phone and calls mom to apologize for teen years.*
ReplyDeleteToo funny!
ReplyDeleteThis made me giggle! Thanks for all the great gifts!
ReplyDeleteHaha this actually made me laugh!! :) I love your advice, Ava will grow up and say.. "Oh my mum was right" haha
ReplyDeleteCheryl
I'm so guilty of this sort of thing in my youth!
ReplyDeleteRebecca-Louise | Autumn Leaves
Haha - I love that she chooses skin care to rebel over! I have done many less healthy things in the name of 'fun' and still do ;)
ReplyDeleteToo funny.
ReplyDeleteWhat's this supposed very famous foaming cleanser? I can tell what the brush is but can't think of the cleanser... :)
I am also very curious about which cleanser this is... any hints?
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteLol! I have to say that even though I think IT will make me more bad than good, I'm always attempted to give it a try! (staying strong till today!)
ReplyDeleteClarisonic and... Origins Checks and Balances frothy wash...? philosophy Purity Made Simple? ;)
ReplyDeleteHa ha so true on many fronts
DeleteI am also laughing out load on the train 😀
OMG that was sooo funny! On a side note - my 24 year old son suffers from ?eczema around his eyes, so much so that the skin resembles elephant hide (not nice). He insists on slathering the area with E45 or Vaseline, neither really helps. If anyone can suggest something better I would be eternally grateful!
ReplyDeleteHi Julia, I've already written here about this once, but in the hope it helps, here it is again. I've had tremendous succees with my son's eczema treating it with a balm I made from scilica gel (just silica and water, I think) mixed with pure oils like coconut, argan and shea (all organic). You could also just try at first the scilica prepared according to the instructions on the bottle, applied with cotton wool. But please do a patch test (my own face, for example, reacts quite badly to argan oil). This together with homeopathy and dietary changes have rid my son from the eczema he once had all over his body!
DeleteI can't believe another mum would dare mess with your daughter's skin. Doesn't she know who you are FGS?!! She should be quaking in her boots...
ReplyDeleteA+ gif use. The Clarins Beauty Repair Concentrate is like liquidised magic fairy dust in a teeny bottle for my skin when it does its bizarre 'allergic reactions that have no rhyme nor reason to them & are totally different to the last time' thing. I now cannot be without it.
ReplyDeleteThis is my go-to skin saviour too :)
DeleteHahahaha this literally made my day! Thanks, needed it.
ReplyDeleteThis is so funny! I can imagine this being me when bump is a teenager. She already has stocks of the best baby skincare I can find. I refuse to use Johnsons!!
ReplyDeleteJust the best post - and if she really said she never liked Duran Duran, well, you'd have to immediately disown her.
ReplyDeleteCutting out wheat & dairy? As far as creams to soothe - even though its mineral oil based Creme de la Mer does help with raw flaky skin.
ReplyDeleteOh dear lord. I just had contact dermatitis and I STILL have no idea what caused it...I'm just glad it is gone. I do find this hilarious though...reminds me of interactions with my mum when I was a teen.
