I'm off to L.A. next week and although I'm working pretty much solidly, I will have at least one day off and so instead of wandering aimlessly in Target/Ulta/Sephora (blood pressure is rising as I type) etc, I wanted to ask if you had any particular brands that you would like me to check out while I'm there. I have a few in mind, but I'm willing to take one for the team (HAHAHAHA) and shop beauty like a demon in the limited time off that I have. I know that a lot of you are based in the US, and I am sometimes asked about brands that we just do not have access to over here, so will definitely be on the lookout for those.
Please do leave me some ideas/requests in the comments. I have a large baggage allowance and am not afraid to use it.
And also....food recommendations please! Otherwise I'll set up shop in Tender Greens and never leave.
Forgot to mention that you should also check out ShiKai body lotion while you're in the States. You can pick it up at Whole Foods and some drug stores. Have a wonderful trip!

I wouldn't buy K Beauty products from Sephora, they are very very marked up and sometimes a different formulation to the originals. Only good for swatching. Order them direct from Korea if you can. For example, the new Too Cool Dinoplatz contour palette is $48 on Sephora and $24 direct from respected Korean online stores. Tony Moly Sheet masks are like $8 or something, compared to $1 online from Korea. Only problem is waiting for them ;)
Sorry, only just seen this! (this is Charlotte) Some good ones are Jolse, Tester Korea, Beauty Net Korea, Rose Rose Shop and Sasa. I've ordered from all of those to the UK. These are often on ebay as well (f2plus1 is Beauty Net Korea, Iamlove-shop and bringbringshop are Jolse I think and RubyRuby is Rose Rose shop). Hope that helps! PS. TK Maxx has a great selection at the moment but a bit more expensive than direct from Korea as well.xx

If you have the opportunity to look at any Algenist or Perricone products while at Sephora, I'd love to hear your thoughts. You've featured Perricone on the blog before, but not lately, so I'm not sure if it's a matter of availability or more in keeping with your habit of only reviewing things you like.

You can get Kat Burki on sale in TJ Maxx quite frequently. I have tried her spritzes (which drench you - the spray is really heavy) and a mask (which made my not-at-all-sensitive skin come up in a red rash). Definitely one to sample before buying!
It's not a brand, but I'd be interested if you have a different SPF routine when you're stateside. We're mostly at a much lower latitude than the UK, so UV is more of an issue. I actually looked and my city is closer to Ibiza than London in latitude. I'd love to hear if your thoughts on daily sunscreen change when you're closer to the Equator.
I'd like your take on the CeraVe line- I love their hydrating cleanser- and Sonia kashuk has come out with more skincare at target. I also echo the drunk elephant line. I tried their serum and it seems good!

Check out the coolest beauty shop in LA - the detox market. They have all the best brands in "green-ish" beauty like kypris, odacite, indie lee, may lindstrom etc. They are in Beverly. I would love your thoughts on Odacite, they are huge now. And I really love their approach to oils and akincare in general. I would be very interested to hear your opinion on their line and their serums and moisturizers in particular.
Ditto to Drunk Elephant (esp. serums). Also La Bella Figura (oils), Kahina Giving Beauty, and Yuli (cleansers).

I third this! Really would love reviews of the K-beauty options from Sephora. I am sooo hesitant to buy anything non-Hirons-approved these days, but a lot of them look amazing. I did splurge on the May Coop Raw Sauce, which I am loving the feel (and packaging) of - no idea if it's any good, though!
Would love to see your inflight skin care routine as I'm off to the US shortly and always get off the plane feeling like a prune , and any recommendations for something to put on prior to landing with good SPF as I'm ghost white and need it :-)

I was going to ask too! I picked up a few bits in Singapore Airport a fortnight ago but would love the Hirons view on them. Bought Aqua Bomb but much prefer the sample of Moisture Bomb I got with it :( I also got the Overnight Recovery Mask and the Aqua Rush Mask on a whim because they were only about €16 each. It's available online from the Belif shop in Scotland. Seen some stuff on Amazon too.
Some of the brands that keep popping up in my life that I haven't tried are Pacifica Beauty, Herbivore, SW Basics, Glamglow, and Drunk Elephant. I am also curious about your thoughts on Glossier and if there are any drugstore brands you like in the US.
LA. LOVE IT. Make sure you go to dinner at El Compadre and have a flaming margarita. Breakfast at Fred 62 in Los Feliz followed by Skylight books. Too many good things to do in LA - but do try and make it to the Griffith Observatory if you can. Lovely views across the valley - almost as good as being taken up the Lickeys.

A review of the revamp of the Bare Minerals skincare range would be great (specifically their new serum - Skinlongevity Vital Power Infusion). It sounds like a lot of BS to me, but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on their key ingredient.

I wish you could check out 100% pure skincare and bath and body products. They are based in California. Also Sanre organic, especially their sunscreens (they are from Georgia). Have a safe trip and lots of fun.
Welcome to LA! Make sure you get some good Mexican food when you are here. Let us know generally where you're staying and I can make restaurant recommendations. LA is huge and you shouldn't be driving around too much for good food. For natural brands, try Detox Market (for high end, like Odacite, May Lindstrom, etc.) and Whole Foods (yes, the supermarket) for moderately-priced skincare and makeup.
Pop on up to one of the DavidsTea locations in the LA area! Their tea is incredible; definitely a must-try for a tea lover like yourself. I've seen brands at Ulta that i'm not sure on in the "budget" skincare selection like Hada Labo Tokyo, Exuviance, Lumene, and derma-e that all look mildly interesting but nothing necessarily groundbreaking. Not sure if they're specifically American brands, but all the same, that section of the skincare aisle always mystifies me when i'm having a browse through the shop. Sephora is gold, of course; Drunk Elephant looks interesting and they're going bonkers over sheet masks there right now, i'd love to know if you find any of the Dr. Jart or TonyMoly masks to be any good.
As far as food, The Curious Palate and The Misfit were two of my favorite places to eat when I was living in Santa Monica last year. Fantastic food. Enjoy!
Drunk Elephant,Tatcha,AmorePacific. Please find a treatment for dark spots for us in the states less than $150 a bottle and as effective as the Zelens Z Luminous. Cheaper is always acceptable of course. Enjoy LA!
Please try the Dermadoctor brand, especially the Ain't Misbehaving cleanser. I have used it for a while and would love to know what you think of this product and of the entire line (it being doctor formulated and everything). Also, like others have said, try the Boscia Tsubaki beauty oil and their cleansing oil.
I'd love to hear what you have to say about Boscia products- they are fabulous and their new sponges are not bad either. I'm also in love with Tatcha's indigo line.
Anddddd any recommendations on Sephoras new Korean beauty skin care brands would be highly appreciated. I've got sensitive skin and don't try new things often- only upon recommendation ;) dr. Jart seems standard- but is it worth it? Or should I splurge on some Sunday Riley? Oh the questions.

I would love to see some new moisturizer reviews from brands at Sephora though I can't specifically name any. Well, on second thought... ReplyDeleteI was going to ask too! I picked up a few bits in Singapore Airport a fortnight ago but would love the Hirons view on them. Bought Aqua Bomb but much prefer the sample of Moisture Bomb I got with it :(

LA. LOVE IT. Make sure you go to dinner at El Compadre and have a flaming margarita. Breakfast at Fred 62 in Los Feliz followed by Skylight books. Too many good things to do in LA - but do try and make it to the Griffith Observatory if you can. Lovely views across the valley - almost as good as being taken up the Lickeys.

ReplyDeleteWelcome to LA! Make sure you get some good Mexican food when you are here. Let us know generally where you're staying and I can make restaurant recommendations. LA is huge and you shouldn't be driving around too much for good food. For natural brands, try Detox Market (for high end, like Odacite, May Lindstrom, etc.) and Whole Foods (yes, the supermarket) for moderately-priced skincare and makeup.

ReplyDeletePop on up to one of the DavidsTea locations in the LA area! Their tea is incredible; definitely a must-try for a tea lover like yourself. I've seen brands at Ulta that i'm not sure on in the "budget" skincare selection like Hada Labo Tokyo, Exuviance, Lumene, and derma-e that all look mildly interesting but nothing necessarily groundbreaking. Not sure if they're specifically American brands, but all the same, that section of the skincare aisle always mystifies me when i'm having a browse through the shop. Sephora is gold, of course; Drunk Elephant looks interesting and they're going bonkers over sheet masks there right now, i'd love to know if you find any of the Dr. Jart or TonyMoly masks to be any good.

Please try the Dermadoctor brand, especially the Ain't Misbehaving cleanser. I have used it for a while and would love to know what you think of this product and of the entire line (it being doctor formulated and everything). Also, like others have said, try the Boscia Tsubaki beauty oil and their cleansing oil.

Anddddd any recommendations on Sephoras new Korean beauty skin care brands would be highly appreciated. I've got sensitive skin and don't try new things often- only upon recommendation ;) dr. Jart seems standard- but is it worth it? Or should I splurge on some Sunday Riley? Oh the questions.

ReplyDeleteI know you have tried SheaMoisture body products, so it would be great to know what you think of their skincare. They smell amazing! Also maybe Derma E products, especially the Glycolic, Peptide and Vitamin A products. These brand are sold at ULTA and CVS.
I agree about all the drunk elephant products! I currently use and love both of the serums. I would love to see some new moisturizer reviews from brands at Sephora though I can't specifically name any. Well, on second thought... Dr. Jart ceramidin cream or lotion, the brand belif, korres, or the brand farmacy! :D Happy shopping!
